Med-City Marathon

The Med City Marathon is a 26.2-mile road-and-trail race in Rochester, Minnesota, held annually since 1996. Its USATF-certified course allows finishers to qualify for the Boston Marathon. By big-city standards, it is a smaller marathon with about 350 participants, and it is part of a larger race weekend. The Mayo Civic Center hosts the Med City Fitness Expo, and other events include a 5K, a 1.8-mile family walk, kids races, a 20-mile race, a half marathon, and a marathon relay, offering multiple options for runners and families. The course has been modified multiple times, contributing to the race’s history. For many years, it followed a point-to-point route from near Rochester International Airport to downtown. This route led runners north through rural farmland, then along the Zumbro River, paved trails, Soldiers Field Golf Course, Mayo Park, Quarry Hill Nature Center, Silver Creek, Silver Lake, and Cascade Lake before ending at the Mayo Civic Center. The current course is a two-loop city route. Local residents Wally and Peggy Arnold founded and directed the race for many years. Later, the event had various managers and sponsors, including Mayo Clinic, Scheels, and Active Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine. Southern Minnesota's heat has also influenced the race; organizers have shortened, closed, or canceled parts of the marathon due to hot weather, and the start time was moved earlier after heat-related issues occurred.

Tour de Essex

Tour de Essex offers a double-up option for runners: a road 10k begins first, followed later that morning by a trail 7k. The event takes place in the fall at Essex Park on West River Road Northwest in Rochester, Minnesota. Participants choose between running on pavement, running on trail, or completing both. The Trail 7k follows the original path through Essex Park, while the Road 10k is a newer choice for those who prefer to keep their shoes clean. Runners completing both races are entered into the Essex Challenge and receive an additional swag item. The event also provides lower-cost entries without swag for each individual race. All profits support the maintenance of the trails at Essex Park, directly benefiting the park where the race is held.

Reggie Oeltjen Douglas Trail 11-Mile Race

The Reggie Oeltjen Douglas Trail 11-Mile Race begins at the Douglas Trailhead on County Highway 14 in Oronoco, Minnesota. Runners gather in Douglas prior to the morning start. This 11-mile race takes place on asphalt, following the Douglas Trail rail-trail which connects northwest Rochester and Pine Island. The majority of the course is tree-lined, providing shade for most of the race. The event originated in 1976 and was later named in honor of Reggie Oeltjen, a dedicated Rochester Running Club member and volunteer. Oeltjen's personal challenge was to run across Minnesota from South Dakota to Wisconsin at the age of 65. Participants receive a race gift, and the finish includes refreshments, such as watermelon.

About cycling & running in Rochester

Rochester Miles and Rolling Roads

Running: Locals run the paved trail web first, because Rochester has more than 85 miles of paved biking and walking trails across over 100 city parks. The paved trail web forms an 8-mile loop, and runners doing intervals just stack laps. Quarry Hill Nature Center gives you over eight miles through woodlands, meadows, prairies, and oak savannas. Soldiers Memorial Field Track handles faster work. Rochester Running Club keeps the weekly meetup and race calendar moving. Med City Marathon, Spring Classic, Polar Bear Prediction 5k Run, Rochester Women’s 4-Mile Race, and Reggie Oeltjen Douglas Trail 11-Mile Race anchor the year.

Cycling: Locals ride a good mix of rail-trail, path, and gravel. The Douglas State Trail runs 5 miles from northwest Rochester to Pine Island, and the round trip makes easy Z2 base miles. The Douglas State Trail also has a 5-mile loop with hills. Great River Ridge State Trail brings 13 miles with hills, farms, and trees. Rochester Active Sports Community runs Monday and Wednesday road rides at 6pm and Thursday gravel rides at 6pm. We Bike Rochester keeps it social with Med City Meander, Morning Coffee Rides, Art4Trails rides, and Concert & Event Rides.

Season: Spring and fall feel like the best training windows, because the air turns manageable and the trails stay busy without feeling cooked. Summer brings warm humid continental weather, All-Comers' Track Meets at Soldiers Memorial Field Track, the YMCA Camp Olson Rochesterfest Mile, and long evenings for gravel. Winter changes the game. Locals still run, but course conditions can be snowy and slippery. Rochester Active Sports Community grooms winter trails for fat tire biking, walking, and running. Quarry Hill and Essex parks pick up groomed Nordic ski trails. January to April bring the windiest months, so Z2 gets honest fast.
