Flapjack Fun Run

The Flapjack Fun Run is a free 5K starting and finishing at Fleet Feet Mishawaka. This is an untimed run, so the focus is not on achieving a specific time or monitoring pace. Runners, joggers, and walkers are all welcome. The process is straightforward: check in on race morning, forgo packet pickup, and proceed with your companions for a relaxed hour. The most distinct tradition follows the finish, as store staff serve warm flapjacks and participants linger to eat. The event cultivates a relaxed community atmosphere, encouraging socializing and post-run gatherings, with in-store discounts offered after the 5K concludes. It resembles a local group run with pancakes more than a structured competition.

Kids Triathlon - South Bend

The Kids Triathlon - South Bend is a children's triathlon held in South Bend, Indiana, at 1902 Fellows St. It is designed for participants aged 5 to 14, with distinct age categories for 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14. The standard race consists of a 50-yard swim, a 1-mile bike ride, and a 1/2-mile run. Participants aged 5-6 and 7-8 will complete a shorter 25-yard swim. The event's purpose is to encourage children's physical activity within a structured race environment, rather than replicating a competitive adult triathlon. The swim portion features one swimmer per lane in each wave, with lifeguards present in and around the water. A guardian may accompany swimmers aged 5-8 on the pool deck. Flotation devices and training wheels are permitted for the swim and bike segments, respectively. Coast Guard-approved life jackets will be provided, and helmets are mandatory for the bike ride. All finishers receive a medal, and the top six finishers in each age group are awarded trophies. Following the race, families can enjoy activities within the track area and attend the awards ceremony. Proceeds from the event benefit the South Bend Venues Parks & Arts Youth Scholarship Program, and race scholarships are also available.

The Big Run Presented by Brooks

The Big Run Presented by Brooks is a free nationwide running event held on the first Saturday of June. The Road Runners Club of America organizes it, with Brooks supporting local organizers, and many runs are hosted by local running clubs in parks or other community spaces. It is designed for all abilities, and participants can choose whatever distance fits their day. There is no single fixed course because each local event sets up its own run. The aim is to bring runners together: club runners, casual joggers, first-timers, and people who just want a shared reason to move. Many locations add a post-run gathering, runners often show up in Brooks gear, and the event maintains a grassroots feel even as it has grown across the country.

About cycling & running in South Bend-Mishawaka

River Miles In The Bend

Running: Locals run the St. Joseph River first, because the water gives every easy day a line to follow. Fleet Feet keeps the social side simple, and the anchor races give people a reason to stay sharp. Mishawaka Riverwalk Loop runs 5 miles past Battell Park, Beutter Park, Central Park, and Kamm Island Park. The route runs 5 miles through Howard Park and Governor Joseph Kernan Park. 8 miles. Sunburst Races, Foot Chase 5k/10k, and The Big Run Presented by Brooks carry the calendar.

Cycling: Riders get a ton of paved hiking and biking trails, so Z2 days usually start on the river instead of random roads. Indiana + Michigan River Valley Trail stretches 17 miles from Niles, Michigan, to downtown Mishawaka, and locals can get on near Byrkit/Fir for dedicated trail miles. 5 miles. Bendix Woods has 7 miles of mountain bike trail, and Rum Village Park offers about six miles. Northwood Hills and the advanced park sections bring the climbs, tight turns, log piles, and punchy drops.

Season: May, June, and September are the best months, because the river paths feel fast and the race calendar has real shape. Summer brings The Big Run Presented by Brooks on June 3rd, Bacon Around the Bend 5K on June 20th, 5k Color Run 2026! on June 27th, Kids Triathlon - South Bend on July 18th, Titan Takeoff 5k & 1 Mile on August 7th, and Running Wild 5K Run & 3K Scavenger Hunt Walk on August 15th. September keeps fitness honest with Foot Chase 5k/10k, Sunburst Races, and 6th Annual Jayco 5K. Winter shifts runners toward steady base miles, while cyclists lean harder on sheltered trail windows and cyclocross grit.
