About cycling & running in Terre HauteTerre Haute Training Notes
Running: Locals run Fairbanks Park when they want river miles, and Deming Park when they want a steady park loop. Wabash Valley Road Runners gives the scene its backbone, with TNT, the 18-week spring half marathon build, and a Kids Running Program on Mondays and Thursdays at Deming Park. Fairbanks Park hosts Riddell National Bank Presents: The Twilight River Run. Hawthorn Park carries The Swamp Stomp and The Indiana Fall Classic. Griffin Bike Park brings Quick Quack Trail Run energy. The loops total 5 km, so locals get real work without leaving town.
Cycling: Locals ride gravel first, then add dirt when the legs want something sharper. J's Bikes Terre Haute Gravel Fondue #1 gives riders 64 miles of mainly gravel, with just a few sections of pavement. The park loop runs 7 miles when base miles need a cleaner target. J's Bikes Racing, licensed as Terre Haute Cycling, keeps the club side legit and supports female racers. Griffin Bike Park brings the DINO MTB Series, singletrack, and quick ups and downs that reward handling skills and power. The climbs are in rolling hills, the southern hills and creeks, and the small bluffs east of town.
Season: June, July, and August are the best months when locals want full training weeks, longer Z2, and reliable evening work. Summer temperatures run high, so runners lean toward Fairbanks Park, Deming Park, and Hawthorn Park early or late. Cyclists use the intersecting gravel roads to stack mileage without overthinking the route. Winter temperatures sit near freezing, and the whole scene shifts toward steadier base miles, shorter intervals, and routes that stay simple. Griffin Bike Park still matters when the dirt is workable, and road riders keep the gravel legs alive when conditions allow.
