Honolulu Triathlon

The Honolulu Triathlon follows the standard long-distance format: a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.22-mile marathon run. The total distance is 140.6 miles, with most events allowing athletes 16 or 17 hours to complete. A typical start is at 7:00 am, featuring a 2-hour-20-minute swim cutoff, a bike cutoff approximately 10 to 10.5 hours after the swim start, and a final run cutoff at 16 or 17 hours. The Hawaii connection is significant as the original Ironman race originated on Oʻahu before relocating to Kailua-Kona, the current site of the annual world championship. The concept arose from a discussion following the Oʻahu Perimeter Relay regarding which athletes—runners, swimmers, or cyclists—were the fittest. U.S. Navy Commander John Collins advocated for cyclists and was instrumental in creating the race. Aloha Tower was the initial transition point between the bike and run segments. Athletes who finish within the time limits are awarded the Ironman title, attracting competitors focused on both endurance and the accomplishment of completing all three disciplines before the deadline.

About cycling & running in Urban Honolulu

Honolulu Base Miles By The Water

Running: Locals run early, before everybody’s out and about. You can knock out 8 miles without making a production of it. Kapiolani Park, Ala Moana Beach Park, and Magic Island work for easy Z2, shakeouts, and 5K rhythm. Pearl Harbor trail stays paved the whole way, and locals use it when they want steady miles. East Oahu gives you Diamond Head to Ala Moana, Aina Haina, and Waikiki when the long run needs room. Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club is Hawaii’s largest running club. Honolulu Marathon Clinic meets every Sunday morning in Kapiolani Park. Honolulu Marathon, Hapalua, Hibiscus Half Marathon, Mango Days 5K, and Coconut Chase 8K keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Local riders know that right out the door they are dealing with urban riding. Ala Moana Beach Park Trail and Diamond Head Loop work for easy spins and recovery laps. The route to Haunama Bay stays mostly flat with wide bike paths and ocean views. Tantalus Drive and Makapu'u Point Route brings the bigger effort. Tantalus Drive climbs 7 km with 697 m elevation, so intervals bite fast. Oahu Populaire gives you 101 km with 574 m elevation when base miles need shape. Kam Highway up to North Shore stays pancake flat. Highway 72 valleys bring punchy 1000-foot climbs. Honolulu Century Ride, Tantalus Time Trial, Dick Evans Memorial Race, and Hale'iwa Metric Century Ride are the anchor events.

Season: Summer runs from May to October, and the city feels best when locals start early. Temps hit around 24°C (75°F), so mornings are for tempo, Z2, and the long stuff. Ala Moana Beach Park and Kapiolani Park stay useful because the loops are simple and the water is close. Winter temps drop to around 18°C (64°F). Winter brings most of the rain, so runners lean on paved routes like Pearl Harbor trail and riders keep the coastal loops flexible. Tantalus still works when the legs want climbing.
