Chambéry

Chambéry sits in the Isère valley with the Alps rising immediately to the east—the city is a staging ground for high-altitude cycling rather than flat road running. The Cyclo Portes du Soleil and La Nivolet route VTT Marche draw serious cyclists into the surrounding massifs, where 1000m+ climbs to Col de la Loze and passes above 2000m elevation are standard weekend fare. Runners find the valley floor and nearby Lac du Bourget gentler, but most training happens in the shadow of peaks that dominate every direction.
