Apeldoorn is the cycling heart of the Netherlands, sitting among the Veluwe region's rolling forests and sand trails where serious mountain bikers congregate—the Dutch Masters of MTB 2024 brings elite competitors to the surrounding singletrack. Road cyclists favour the flat-to-rolling Sallands Mooiste (140km) and Ronde van Ugchelen (5km) circuits through beech and pine woodland. Runners find mostly gentle park loops around the royal gardens and Palace Het Loo, with harder terrain just north where the Veluwe dunes rise to 100m elevation.
