Vitoria-Gasteiz sits on the Basque plateau at 580m elevation where rolling farmland and beech forests dominate the landscape—runners here deal with constant gentle climbs rather than flat fast courses. Cyclists thrive on the region's signature long-distance events: the Prueba Ciclista Vitoria and Prueba Cicloturista Vitoria both loop through 200km+ of varied terrain mixing valleys and ridge climbs into the Basque hills to the north and east. The city itself is compact and manageable, but the real appeal is heading out on gravel or mountain bike into the surrounding mendi (mountains) for steep technical riding.
