Running in the Inland Empire is mostly flat through urban and suburban sprawl, though the PA for LA 5K taps into the local racing calendar. Cyclists have better terrain: the Riverside Citrus Classic and Tour de Foothills exploit the nearby San Bernardino Mountains and foothills rising to 900–1200 metres, offering sustained climbs within 30–40km of the metro area, while the OC MTB Gypsum Canyon XC Race reaches into Orange County's rougher terrain to the south.
