Summer Run Graz

Summer Run Graz is a three-race summer series held at Stadtstrand Graz. Each race begins at 09:00 on the same measured 5 km loop. Runners select their distance during the event by completing a chosen number of laps, allowing for 5 km runs or longer efforts of 10, 15, or 20 km when these distances are available. The 5 km course is AIMS measured, ensuring international validity and providing a clear basis for comparing performances across the series. The route starts and finishes at the Grazer Stadtstrand. It crosses the Puchsteg, follows the Murradweg, passes under the Puntigamer Bridge, ascends the southern bike overpass, proceeds into Murfelder Straße, and turns shortly after the Gasrohrsteg before heading back north. Registration is open for individual races, the complete three-race package, and for couples. Participants who register for the three-run package will use the same bib for all events. Individual runners can participate from age 12, and couples registration is open for ages 14 to 99.

Austria eXtreme Triathlon

Austria eXtreme Triathlon is an independent extreme triathlon in Austria, belonging to the small-field mountain-race category of long-distance triathlon. The format demands more toughness and self-reliance than a standard triathlon: races might feature a cold or night swim, a bike leg with significant climbing, and a run that continuously ascends into higher terrain. Athlete numbers are typically limited to around 250 to 300, allowing organizers to utilize remote roads, trails, and mountain sections unsuitable for larger events. The course structure is straightforward: swim, then bike and run through locations where altitude, weather, and distance are critical factors. Competitors may require their own support crew for nutrition, hydration, apparel, and logistics, and these crews can also join them on challenging mountain segments. Athletes often must carry emergency food and clothing anticipating changing conditions. Austria eXtreme is part of the broader extreme-triathlon movement that emerged after Norseman in Norway, alongside events like Swissman, Celtman, AlpsMan, Winterman, StoneBrixiaMan, and Knysna Extreme, with each event showcasing its unique local landscape rather than a conventional urban course.

Graz Training Notes

Corrida: Graz runners use the Mur River Path when they want clean Z2, tempo, or 400m repeats without leaving town. The Murradweg starts near Keplerbruecke, follows R2 north, and gives asphalt that works well for intervals. Leechwald in Mariatrost is the soft-ground escape, and its half-marathon route gives 21 km with 300 m of gain. Hilmteich makes the easy start point by tram line 1. The ESN Graz running group meets every Wednesday at 17:30 at Neubaugasse 12 for an easy going run. Graz Marathon, Trail Run Graz, Summer Run Graz, and Grazathlon anchor the calendar.

Ciclismo: Graz riders treat the Mur cycling path R2 as the fast north-south line through the city. Route R2 runs 361 km in total, and the Tour de Mur uses it as the backbone for a 3-stage ride that covers 333 km. South Graz rolls into the Steiermark wine region with relatively flat roads, good tarmac, and long base miles. West Graz points at Plabutsch mountain, where short steep climbs and descents keep the legs honest. Schöckl gives road riders a climb to 1125 m, while Platte brings the MTB and singletrack crowd. Coffee Ride, Maghanoy, and the Biketest - Festival Graz/Schöckl keep the scene social.

Temporada: Spring and autumn are the best training months because Graz sits around a pleasant 20 degrees and the legs feel good for longer rides or marathon blocks. Summer gets hot up to 30°C, so locals start early, use the Old Town fountains, and keep hard intervals short unless the shade is working. The Mur River Path and Stadtpark stay useful for easy running, while Schwarzl See gives riders a southern target. Winter changes the rhythm more than the map, because the basin stays warmer than expected, gets more sunshine and less wind or rain than Vienna or Salzburg, and still lets steady Z2 happen.
