Reno running is dominated by high desert terrain at 1,400m elevation with cold winters and intense sun; the Journal Jog 8K and Glowing in the Streets 5K are local staples, and most training happens on the Truckee River Trail or up into the piñon foothills. Cyclists split time between the flatter Carson Valley roads south (the Spoker Ride heads that direction through rangeland) and steep climbs into the Sierra Nevada west toward Lake Tahoe, where elevation gains of 600–900m over 15–20km are standard weekend routes.
