About cycling & running in Salvador

Salvador Training Notes

Running: Locals put the easy miles on the coastline, especially around Barra. Barra has that simple beach-loop energy, and you will see everyone running around the beach there. Ondina, Rio Vermelho, and Piata also get runners, cyclists, and paddlers moving in the same coastal rhythm. Jardim de Alah is a great alternative, and locals call it one of the best spots for running. Rio Vermelho towards Barra works when you want a straightforward line. Local run clubs are not listed in the brief, so the anchor events carry the scene: Maratona Salvador, MEIA MARATONA BLUE RUN SALVADOR 2026, Santander Night Run, and DESAFIO 15K CASA ESPORTIVA 2026.

Cycling: Locals ride a lot, and Salvador has 1,300 cycle routes with 38,399 km tracked across the city. Salvador gives you short base miles too, including one 10.7 km route that climbs 41 m. Rua de Junho gives a longer hit with a 40.1 km route that climbs 501 m. Ladeira dos Coqueiros and Rua Alto do Coqueiro are where the climbing starts to bite, and Rua Alto do Coqueiro to Rua Natal runs 27.1 km with 689 m ascent. Trans Salvador is the big dirt test, with 697 km, 12,896 m ascent, and 65% unpaved. Local cycling clubs are not listed in the brief, so Só Quero Pedalar and Circuito Brasileiro Duathlon Salvador are the names to watch.

Season: March and September are the best months for riding, so locals use them for cleaner Z2, intervals, and longer gran fondo-style days. Summer puts plenty of runners on the Salvador coastline, and Barra, Ondina, Piata, and Jardim de Alah stay busy. Winter shifts running toward the east side, because that side offers better running conditions. April through July brings the rainy stretch for Bahia riding, so locals keep plans flexible and lean into shorter loops, flatter Itaparica-style days, or hilly work when the roads allow it. Bahia Cycling Tour timing also points away from April to July, especially for longer rural days around Santo Amaro, Cachoeira, and the Paraguassu river.
