Dresden Marathon

The Dresden Marathon begins on Ostra-Allee, guiding runners past Dresden’s major landmarks within the first kilometer: the Zwinger, Taschenbergpalais, Theaterplatz, the Semperoper, the castle, the cathedral, and Georgentor. This Sunday-in-October race in Dresden, Germany, held since 1999, offers a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10.55 km quarter marathon, and a 4.2 km tenth marathon, catering to all age groups. The event draws a significant field for the region, with a participation record around 14,300 runners. The marathon course consists of two laps on a flat city circuit covering the center, Neustadt, and Großer Garten. The second lap deviates from the first for approximately 65% of its length, avoiding a simple repetition. Participants cross the Elbe via the Augustus Bridge, proceed through Inner and Outer Neustadt towards Stauffenbergallee, then pass through the Waldschlößchentunnel and over the Waldschlößchenbrücke into Johannstadt and Gruna. The route encircles and crosses Großer Garten, passes the Transparent Factory, and then directs towards the half-marathon finish at the Maritim Hotel or the marathon turn-off near the Italienisches Dörfchen. Elite times show men finishing near 2:10 and women near the low 2:30s, with the shorter distances welcoming participants beyond marathon specialists.

Leichtathletik-DM

The German Athletics Championships serve as the national outdoor title meet for German track and field, with the primary summer program focused on a stadium weekend. The main venue is the Lohrheidestadion in Wattenscheid, Bochum, and the events there encompass the core track and field disciplines, not solely road races. Some events are not held at the main stadium meet, so the championship extends across Germany with separate competitions for winter throwing, road running, mountain running, race walking, long relays, combined events, ultra distances, and cross country. The pole vault takes place as a public marketplace event in Hannover, and the walking program now includes half marathon and marathon distances, replacing the former 20 km and 35 km races. Team competitions were discontinued due to low participation. Recent separate events have yielded a German best performance and multiple championship records, including those set at newly established race distances.

QDH - Lauf Quer durch die Dresdner Heide

QDH - Lauf Quer durch die Dresdner Heide is a running event in Dresden-Weixdorf, located on the northern edge of Dresden, utilizing routes within the Dresdner Heide. It typically takes place in September, with the main activities commencing in the morning. Sportgemeinschaft Weixdorf e.V. Abt. Leichtathletik organizes the event, which provides a variety of distances: 0.5 km, 2 km, 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, approximately 22 km, and 30 km, in addition to Nordic Walking. The shortest race is a 0.5 km children's run for participants up to seven years old. The field thus includes very young runners and adults tackling the longer forest courses. The name reflects the race's nature: crossing the Dresden Heath rather than completing a city-center circuit. Historical records indicate the event has exceeded forty editions and has previously been sponsored by REWE.

About cycling & running in Dresden

Dresden Base Miles

Running: Locals run the Elberadweg when they want flat rhythm, city-centre views, and clean Z2 beside the River Elbe. The Elbe valley run from the city centre to Castle of Pillnitz gives you 25km when the legs want a longer day. Dresdner Heide sits right at the doors of Dresden, and its forests are full of open paths for circuits, intervals, and a solid climb starting at km 1.5. KRAFT Runners Dresden meets every Wednesday at 19:00 at Emma No.1, Bischofsweg 32. Dresden Marathon, Dresden Half, Dresdner Nachtlauf, QDH, and Dresdner Nikolauslauf keep the calendar honest.

You can knock out 5 km and 550 m of ascent when the short day still needs bite. brings the road, MTB, XC, XCM, RTF, and cyclocross crowd together for training and competitions. The climbs sit north in Dresdner Heide, west toward the Ore Mountain Foreland, and east toward the West Lusatian Hill Country and Uplands.

Season: May and July feel like the cleanest months for stacking running weeks and riding volume. Summer averages 20°C, so locals get warm evenings for Elberadweg spins, Großer Garten shakeouts, and longer Z2 without overthinking kit. The city sits at 112 m, but the terrain changes fast once you leave the Elbe Valley. Winter averages 7°C, and morning temperatures under -10°C are not uncommon. Snow and ice can make riding impossible, while runners usually shift to steadier paths, shorter intervals, and the routes that stay manageable underfoot.
