Dresden runners use the flat Elbe valley and riverbank paths for speed work, with the Dresden Marathon following the Elbe through the city and surrounding vineyards. The nearby Saxon Switzerland (Sächsische Schweiz) sandstone hills 20km south offer steep terrain for trail runners tackling the AdventureWalk Sächsische Schweiz. Cyclists have it even better: the Elbe valley provides a nearly traffic-free 200km route east toward Prague, while the 1. Röder-Elbe-Radmarathon exploits this gentle corridor, and more serious climbs into the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) west of the city give the ERZTALER RTF its teeth.
