About cycling & running in StuttgartStuttgart Training Notes
Running: Locals run the Kessel with respect, because Stuttgart makes you climb as soon as you leave the easy line. Schlossgarten gives runners the city’s number one flat stretch, and the 7 km route runs from the old town toward the Neckar River. Rosensteinpark and Killesbergpark keep base miles green, while the Rosenstein Park Route links neatly with Schlossgarten. Tuesday Athletic Run Club meets every Tuesday at 19:00 at kiost in Stuttgart-Ost for 5-6 km with easy runs, sprints, or intervals. Stuttgart-Lauf anchors the calendar, with B2RUN Stuttgart, AOK Firmenlauf Feuerbach, and Feuerbacher Volkslauf Rund um die Mammutbäume filling the social race slots.
Cycling: Locals ride with the same rule every week: be aware it’s hilly here. Fietsen Cycling Club Stuttgart shows riders the nicest routes around the Kessel, sometimes quick, sometimes gemütlich, sometimes asphalt, sometimes off-road. ADFC Stuttgart brings tours of varying difficulty, and its Social Gravel Ride comes out in the warmer months. RSV Vaihingen and RTC Stuttgart give the race and hobby crowd more structure. Radel-Thon loops 83 kilometers around the Stuttgart valley basin, while Woodpecker Trail near Degerloch drops 120 meters over about one kilometer. Birkenkopf, Württemberg, Grüner Heiner, and Bernhartshöhe hill put the climbs close, and Brezel-Race, Alb Extrem, Ara Schönbuch, and 50.Weinlandtour give riders anchor goals.
Season: Spring, Summer, and Autumn are the best months, and locals use them for Z2, crit prep, gran fondo legs, cyclocross skills, and longer forest rides. Summer brings warm days, with average highs around 24°C, and the nearby hills, Swabian Alb mountains, Black Forest, Schurwald, and Swabian-Franconian Forest often shield the city from harsh weather. Thunderstorms can still roll through, and rare hailstorms make people check the sky before long rides. Winter stays chilly, with daily means just above freezing, so runners keep the flat Schlossgarten useful and cyclists shift more toward gravel, steady base miles, and the better-weather windows.
