Stuttgart-Lauf

The Stuttgart-Lauf, held annually since 1994, takes place on a June weekend centered at the MHPArena in Stuttgart. While the half marathon is its primary event, the race weekend now covers a half marathon, a relay half marathon, a 10 km run, walking and Nordic walking, wheelchair and handbike races, inline skating, and multiple short children’s races. Over 4,000 runners complete the half marathon, making it one of Germany’s significant mass-participation events. The half marathon route largely follows the course used for the World Athletics Championships marathon in Stuttgart. It begins near NeckarPark and concludes inside the MHPArena. The path winds through Untertürkheim and Bad Cannstatt, runs alongside the Neckar River past vineyards and the Max-Eyth-See, proceeds to Hofen and Mühlhausen, and then heads back toward Münster and the stadium. Race logistics, a running fair, and a health symposium are managed at the nearby Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle, with the Porsche-Arena offering changing facilities for participants.

HYROX Stuttgart

HYROX Stuttgart is the Stuttgart event in the HYROX series, an indoor fitness competition following the same structure as HYROX events globally. Competitors run 1 kilometre, followed by a functional workout station, repeating this cycle eight times for a total of 8 km of running and eight workout stations. As the format is consistent across cities, a Stuttgart result can be directly compared to results from other HYROX races. The series originated in Germany when Christian Toetzke and Olympic field hockey champion Moritz Fürste aimed to create a competition for gym-goers and runners who value quantifiable performance. The inaugural event in Hamburg hosted 650 participants, and the series subsequently expanded into a worldwide circuit featuring partner gyms, prize money for top athletes, and sponsors like Puma and Red Bull. Stuttgart aligns with this broader structure, functioning less as a conventional road race and more as a structured indoor challenge assessing running speed, strength, and the ability to manage repeated intense efforts with minimal rest.

About cycling & running in Stuttgart

Stuttgart Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Kessel with respect, because Stuttgart makes you climb as soon as you leave the easy line. Schlossgarten gives runners the city’s number one flat stretch, and the 7 km route runs from the old town toward the Neckar River. Rosensteinpark and Killesbergpark keep base miles green, while the Rosenstein Park Route links neatly with Schlossgarten. Tuesday Athletic Run Club meets every Tuesday at 19:00 at kiost in Stuttgart-Ost for 5-6 km with easy runs, sprints, or intervals. Stuttgart-Lauf anchors the calendar, with B2RUN Stuttgart, AOK Firmenlauf Feuerbach, and Feuerbacher Volkslauf Rund um die Mammutbäume filling the social race slots.

Cycling: Locals ride with the same rule every week: be aware it’s hilly here. Fietsen Cycling Club Stuttgart shows riders the nicest routes around the Kessel, sometimes quick, sometimes gemütlich, sometimes asphalt, sometimes off-road. ADFC Stuttgart brings tours of varying difficulty, and its Social Gravel Ride comes out in the warmer months. RSV Vaihingen and RTC Stuttgart give the race and hobby crowd more structure. Radel-Thon loops 83 kilometers around the Stuttgart valley basin, while Woodpecker Trail near Degerloch drops 120 meters over about one kilometer. Birkenkopf, Württemberg, Grüner Heiner, and Bernhartshöhe hill put the climbs close, and Brezel-Race, Alb Extrem, Ara Schönbuch, and 50.Weinlandtour give riders anchor goals.

Season: Spring, Summer, and Autumn are the best months, and locals use them for Z2, crit prep, gran fondo legs, cyclocross skills, and longer forest rides. Summer brings warm days, with average highs around 24°C, and the nearby hills, Swabian Alb mountains, Black Forest, Schurwald, and Swabian-Franconian Forest often shield the city from harsh weather. Thunderstorms can still roll through, and rare hailstorms make people check the sky before long rides. Winter stays chilly, with daily means just above freezing, so runners keep the flat Schlossgarten useful and cyclists shift more toward gravel, steady base miles, and the better-weather windows.
