Rome Half Marathon

The Roma-Ostia Half Marathon begins in Rome's EUR district and proceeds towards the coast at Ostia, distinguishing it as a city-to-sea half marathon rather than a circuit within central Rome. This annual road race, typically held in early to mid-March, attracts Italy's largest half-marathon participation, with previous events seeing approximately 12,000 entries and over 9,000 finishers. The event caters to all levels, featuring a mass race for general participants and a Business Run, which serves as an Italian half-marathon championship for corporate teams. The course runs in a direct southeasterly direction from EUR to the coast, incorporating long sections along Via Cristoforo Colombo and concluding near Ostia's beaches. Originally, the event was a longer Rome-to-Ostia race of about 27 to 30 km before adapting to the official half-marathon distance of 21.1 km. Some editions benefited from downhill segments and tailwinds, leading to performances not being eligible for records or personal bests; however, subsequent course adjustments have made the race faster and record-eligible. Notable past winners include Olympic marathon champion Stefano Baldini, Boston Marathon winner Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, New York Marathon winner Franca Fiacconi, and Olympic marathon medalist Galen Rupp.

Gran Fondo Rerum Novarum Città di Carpineto Romano

Gran Fondo Rerum Novarum Città di Carpineto Romano is a road cycling gran fondo held in Carpineto Romano, a hill town south of Rome in Lazio. The event is part of the Pedalatium circuit and the Granfondo del Lazio series, offering a Gran Fondo, a Medio Fondo, and a separate cyclotourism ride for those seeking a less competitive day. Entry fees are typically tiered, and the race village and packet pickup are located near the elementary school on Via Giacomo Matteotti. Riders can select a 126 km route with 1,620 m of elevation gain or a 94 km route with 1,220 m of elevation gain, ensuring the shorter option still presents significant climbing. The main race groups depart in the morning, with cyclotourism riders following soon after. The first finishers are anticipated before noon. The start and finish area also serves as a community gathering point, featuring children’s activities, music, dancing, official awards, and complimentary guided museum tours for non-participants.

Gran Fondo La Medievale

Gran Fondo La Medievale is a road cycling granfondo held in Lazio, centering on Tivoli and San Polo dei Cavalieri. Scheduled for late September, the event features a Saturday uphill time trial followed by a Sunday road race. Over 500 cyclists participated in the two events in the source material. Both races were part of the Italian FCI Master national championship, meaning participants competed for national jerseys, not just finish medals. The Sunday race begins in Tivoli and spans 105 km within the Parco dei Monti Lucretili. The critical section occurs before and during the final ascent to San Polo dei Cavalieri. In one edition, three riders established a nearly four-minute lead with 30 km remaining. The leading group then diminished on the last climb, with Nicolò Tamussi ultimately winning the men's race by five seconds. Loretta Giudici secured the women's victory, finishing 50 seconds ahead of Rachele Chisci. Asd Ciclismo Lazio is the organizer, and the event provided live audio streaming via ultimochilometro.it.

About cycling & running in Rome

Rome Training Notes

Running: Locals run early, when you feel like the city is essentially all yours. Villa Borghese gives you paved paths, grass tracks, and an easy park loop of about 3.5 km. The Tiber River Promenade carries runners through the city centre, and the river path from Ponte del Risorgimento to Ponte Sublicio gives you about 11 km. Appia Antica Regional Park works best on Sundays, when the main road closes. Amor Run Club A.S.D. brings the social miles through sessions, races, Strava, Instagram, and WhatsApp. RUN ROME THE MARATHON 2026 is the anchor event, with Roma Race For The Cure and VII^ 6 Ore di Roma in the mix.

Cycling: Locals ride the Lungotevere pista ciclabile for base miles, and that river line runs about 35 km. Via Appia Antica gives you the classic Rome ride, and the Appian Way route with Aqueduct Park runs about 25 km. Villa Borghese suits easier spins, while Villa Pamphili asks for stronger legs. Topbike rental is the named rider hub here, even if the brief does not name a cycling club. Pincian Hill and Janiculum Hill hold the climbs when intervals need bite. La Rappiandò stretches to 600 km, and Gran Fondo Rerum Novarum Città di Carpineto Romano gives the gran fondo crowd 118 km.

Season: Locals treat early morning as the best training window all year. Summer puts temperatures above 35°C often, so runners and riders move Z2 before the stone gets hot. The city centre still works at night, when the highlights are lit and the crowds begin to thin. Winter days in Rome are seldom very cold, but evenings feel chillier after a ride or a steady run. Villa Doria Pamphilj, Caffarella Park, and Aqueduct Park have paved, unpaved, meadow, field, and grass options. Cobblestone stays part of the rhythm, so locals keep it simple: go with the flow.
