35. Sri Chinmoy 12h Lauf Basel

The Sri Chinmoy 12h Lauf Basel is a 12-hour road ultramarathon held in Basel, Switzerland, on the Sportanlage St. Jakob. Rather than a point-to-point course, participants run laps on a 1.1-kilometer asphalt loop with no listed elevation change. The objective is straightforward: run for 12 hours, cover the maximum possible distance, and have each final partial lap measured. This event is organized by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, holds an IAU Bronze Label, and its results are eligible for official rankings. The loop is fast, paved, and illuminated at night, making it suitable for runners aiming for specific distances and those learning to pace a long ultra on a managed course. The event also includes 6-hour and 100 km split races, offering shorter objectives. The fields are typically modest, comprising a few dozen men and women, but the competition at the front can be intense. Winners have exceeded 130 km in multiple editions, with one surpassing 140 km. The race has been held since at least 1990, establishing a significant tradition in Swiss fixed-time ultrarunning.

3. Triathlon Basel

Triathlon Basel takes place in late August in Basel, centered on the Rhine River. Competitors swim in the river, cycle along its banks, and run beside it. The event features an Olympic-distance race (53 km) and a Sprint race (21.8 km), with relay options for both, allowing individuals to compete solo or form three-person teams to share the swim, bike, and run segments. The race is designed to be accessible for local residents and newcomers, not exclusively for seasoned triathletes. The swim leg proceeds downstream in the Rhine, reducing the challenge for novices, and the Sprint race is intended for those completing their first triathlon without focusing on speed. Bike regulations also prioritize practicality: city, mountain, and road bikes are permitted, but e-bikes, time-trial bikes, and road bikes with handlebar extensions are not. Participants born in 2010 or earlier are eligible, and the individual Olympic and Sprint races are popular enough to warrant waiting lists.

Ettinger Backyard Ultra

Ettinger Backyard Ultra is a last-runner-standing race in Ettingen BL. All participants run the same 6.706 km loop with approximately 60 metres of climbing. A new lap begins on the hour, every hour. Each runner must finish the loop within 60 minutes to start the next lap. The format is straightforward yet demanding: there is no predetermined finish distance, and the race concludes only when a single person remains capable of completing a full lap alone. The timing dictates the race. Signals sound three, two, and one minute before each start, followed by the bell that begins the lap; missing the start means disqualification. Runners may not leave the course during a lap, receive personal assistance on the course, or use poles. The short breaks between loops are the sole opportunity to eat, drink, change equipment, and recover. Headlamps are mandatory during the night, and the routine can become a cycle of running, refueling, rehydrating, and waiting. The race attracts a substantial local field; one recent edition had 414 participants, and its winner completed 28 rounds for 187.768 km.

About cycling & running in Basel

Basel Training Notes

Running: Basel runs close to the Rhein, and locals use it for easy Z2, intervals, and sunrise miles when the city still feels asleep. The Rhein stretch between Dreirosenbruecke and Schwarzwaldbruecke stays a local staple, and the Harbour to Old Town route gives you 5km with 20m elevation. The Wiese and the forests of Lange Erlen work for softer ground, while the Birs and Birsköpfli give you loops on the Birs Kraftwerk Insel. Basel Dragons Running Club runs Mondays and Thursdays, and Basel Running Club brings serious structure. B2Run Schweizer Firmenlauf, Sri Chinmoy 24h Lauf Basel, Dreilaender-Lauf, Allschwiler Klausenlauf, and Basler Stadtlauf keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Basel riding lives in the Dreilaendereck region, where locals stack base miles across borders and then go hunting for the hills. VCC THURSDAY RIDE rolls every Thursday evening during Daylight Saving Time, and the SOCIAL group usually covers around 50k and/or 1000Vm at 21-24Km/h. The SPORT group usually rides 60-75Km and/or over 1000vm at 25-28Km/h, so nobody is hiding from work. Chrischona sits east as the highest point in Basel-Stadt, and Bettingen gives the ride a proper edge. Dornach and Gempen sit south, where Bergzeitfahren Dornach-Gempen Radsporttage Dornach and Gempen-Berglauf point straight at the Gempenturm on the Schartenfluh.

Season: May gives Basel the best training window, with enough warmth for steady run blocks, longer rides, and cleaner Z2 days. Summer brings warm, humid weather, so locals run the Rhein early and ride before it gets too hot. St. Johanns-Park, Lange Erlen, and Wenkenpark stay useful when you want shade, rhythm, and a softer reset between harder days. 2 days of rain or snow each year. Runners keep going with a long sleeve and light jacket, while cyclists shift toward steadier miles, short unpaved sectors, and club rides when the light allows.
