Grand Prix von Bern

The Grand Prix von Bern is a 10-mile road race held annually in the Swiss capital since 1982. It ranks among Switzerland's largest running events, with recent fields accommodating tens of thousands of participants. The main race presents a challenge: the distance exceeds 16 km, and its elevation changes make it more difficult than a standard city run. While not exclusively for elites, the course records are swift, set by Geoffrey Kamworor for men and Marleen Renders for women. The route crosses Bern's Old Town, where spectators line the streets, creating one of the day's most energetic sections. The event also offers alternative races: the Altstadt Grand-Prix, a 4.7 km race for walkers, and the Bären Grand Prix, a 1.6 km event for children, families, beginners, and individuals with disabilities. This children's and family race bears the Special Olympics Switzerland "Unified" label, highlighting the event's commitment to inclusion. Dedicated participants are also a key element, with "Golden Runners" recognized for their consistent participation year after year.

Gravel Festival Bern

Gravel Festival Bern gathers Switzerland's gravel cycling community in Bern every October. Founded in 2018 as Gravel Ride & Race Bern, the event now offers Race or Ride, Family Ride, and Kids Cross formats, accommodating adults, children, and families. It is Switzerland's largest gravel event, prioritizing enjoyment across all categories. The route is described simply as gravel riding near Bern, with the core concept captured by the phrase 'the fun starts where the asphalt ends.' Beyond the cycling, the festival features a large gravel expo showcasing bikes, equipment, food, and brands. This includes technical services and new product displays from cycling experts like SCHALLER Radrennsport. The festival attracts racers, recreational riders, families, those interested in cycling, and individuals seeking to connect with the gravel community.

About cycling & running in Bern

Bern Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Aare when they want Z2 without drama, and the City Runs when the Old Town feels too good to skip. The seven-kilometre City Run passes the Zytglogge, Bern Minster, Bear Park, and Bundeshaus, so intervals still get a Bern backdrop. Founders Running Club Bern meets every Saturday evening for 5-8km routes, usually along the Aare or through the Old Town. The group keeps a conversational pace, because if you can’t talk anymore, you’re going too fast. Bremgarten forest gives runners signed routes from 1.9 to 17.3 kilometres. GP Bern is the anchor event, and locals still call it the most beautiful ten miles in the world.

Cycling: Locals ride out of Bern fast, because the cobbles give way to riverbanks, farmland, foothills, and proper base miles within minutes. The Belpberg Gürbe Gravel Loop starts at Parliament Square and runs 65 kilometres over dusty gravel, farm tracks, and a short ascent to Chutzen. The UNESCO-Tour runs around 60 kilometres from the Old City to Rosengarten, Brünnen Westside, Laupen, Lake Wohlen, and Bremgarten forest. The Tour d’Emmental goes over 100 kilometres from Burgdorf through Lueg, Schonegg hill, Lüderenalp, Trubschachen, Moosegg, and Arni. The climbs sit in Emmental, Gantrisch, and the Schwarzenburg-Riggisberg line. Thömus Rider Collective, Disco Cycle, Cycling my Way, Fast and female, Pro Senectute, and Pro Velo Bern keep the scene moving. Gravel Festival Bern, Berner Rundfahrt, Tour de Berne 2026, and Chasing Cancellara Bern-Zermatt give the calendar its sharp edges.

Season: Spring averages 7°C, so locals go early for intervals and keep the long stuff near the Aare or in Bremgarten forest. Summer puts the Gurten Trail in play for shade, although the trail closes for four days in July during the Gurten Festival. Roadies stack gran fondo legs toward Emmental and Gantrisch, while gravel riders keep Belpberg and Gürbetal in the rotation. Winter averages 2°C, so runners use the flatter river paths and cyclists shift toward repair courses, technique sessions, and cleaner rides when frost or snow cover changes the surface.
