Marathon Lucerne

Marathon Lucerne starts and finishes at the Swiss Transport Museum, placing runners beside one of Lucerne's most familiar public landmarks. This road marathon, first held in 2007, was formerly known as the Swiss City Marathon. The event also features a half marathon and a 13 km "try-out marathon" for those seeking a shorter distance. The Lucerne Marathon Association organizes the race, with Coop as the primary sponsor. The marathon course utilizes a half-marathon circuit, meaning full marathon runners complete the loop twice. The route proceeds along Haldenstrasse, passing the chapel royal and Lucerne’s historic luxury hotels. It crosses the pier from Schwanenplatz, offering views of Chapel Bridge, the Water Tower, and the Old Town, before continuing past Jean Nouvel’s Culture and Congress Centre. The course then circles the Horw peninsula, follows Lake Lucerne with the Central Swiss Alps visible, passes the 13 km finish in Horw, goes through the Allmend stadium area, and returns to the pier and the museum. Its inaugural event had 5,594 finishers, the largest debut for a running event in Switzerland, and Viktor Roethlin, a prominent Swiss marathon runner, acts as race ambassador.

Sempachersee-Triathlon, Nottwil

The Sempachersee-Triathlon takes place in Nottwil, Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Sempach. The event follows the standard swim-bike-run structure, and published start lists allow athletes to see the competition beforehand. Datasport manages the race's operational systems, including online registration, participant administration, timing, bib printing, data management, event updates, and support. As course distances and route specifics are not provided, the event presents as a local Swiss triathlon with a structured entry and timing process, distinct from informal community races.

About cycling & running in Lucerne

Lucerne Training Notes

Running: Locals run the paved path by Lake Lucerne, the river Reuss, and the flat laps around Rotsee when they want clean Z2 without fuss. The city centre makes short intervals easy before work, and the lake path can stay lit and plowed after a bit of snow. Runners Club meets every second Thursday at 7:00 PM at SIP Café Luzern for a 5–7 km run. DirtySox runs on Mondays, KlubLuzern runs on Wednesdays, and Läuferriege Ebikon keeps training varied. Marathon Lucerne, SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne, Rotseelauf, Lake Lucerne Ultra, and Swiss Trailrun Pilatus anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride from Lucerne toward Lake Sempach, Lake Zug, Sarnen, Entlebuch, Rigi, and Napf when base miles need a view. BikeLokal runs social rides on Thursdays, and the usual longer tours sit around 90–100 km when the group has time. The Entlebuch Passes Route covers 114 km, and Herzschlaufe Napf stretches the day to 151 km. Lake Sempach gives steady circuits of 20 km and 33 km. The climbs sit toward Pilatus, Rigi, Stanserhorn, Klewenalp, Grimsel, Gotthard, and Furka, while Jochpass Trail, Klewenalp tour, and CKW-Cup MTB Rain keep MTB legs honest.

Season: April to October gives Lucerne the best cycling window, and spring days sit around 10–18°C before summer brings warm 18–28°C valley weather. July and August make the alpine side clearer, with valleys at 18–26°C and cooler air higher up. Locals still expect brief showers from the Alps, but they rarely take over the day. April and October can start with fog over the lakes, and midday usually clears it. Winter runs from November to March with 7–8 hour days and frequent icy conditions, so runners shift carefully and cyclists keep the big Z2 and gran fondo plans lower or later.
