RACE THE LIGHT CLASSIC

Race The Light Classic is centered on Fantastic Light, a Kentucky-bred Thoroughbred who competed internationally from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Foaled in the United States, he was trained in England and Dubai, racing under Maktoum Al Maktoum's ownership before joining Godolphin. His career was notably global, with races in seven countries and victories in top-tier Group One or Grade I events in five. Fantastic Light debuted at Sandown, winning a minor stakes race after appearing green early. His most significant victories included the Dubai Sheema Classic, Man o' War Stakes, Hong Kong Cup, Tattersalls Gold Cup, Prince of Wales's Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes, and Breeders' Cup Turf. He concluded his career with 25 starts, achieving 12 wins, 5 second-place finishes, and 3 thirds, accumulating over $8.4 million. His peak year saw him secure titles in both Europe and the United States, and his competition with Galileo provided a distinct narrative to his career beyond just a record of major wins.

South Hams Ultra

The South Hams Ultra begins at Mothecombe Car Park near Plymouth, Devon, directing runners into the South Hams via a point-to-point course. This trail race series offers three distances: 100 miles, 44 miles, and a marathon, catering to ultra runners and those seeking a challenging off-road marathon. The courses trace the South Hams Way across Devon's coastline and countryside. They incorporate coastal paths, bridleways, moorland trails, estuary crossings, and segments on Dartmoor. All distances conclude at Mothecombe. The longer events emphasize distance and elevation gain over a flat, quick race. Checkpoints, aid stations, and course support are situated along the route.

Race For Life Plymouth

Race For Life Plymouth starts and finishes on hardstanding at The Hoe in Plymouth, Devon, with 5K and 10K events. Both distances begin at 11:00am. This event is part of the Race For Life series, which raises money for cancer research. The route uses paved paths, closed roads around the Hoe, and pathways through Hoe Gardens. Runners and walkers should anticipate some steep inclines and uneven surfaces, meaning it is not a completely flat city course. Fundraising is integral to the event, with participants able to start a GoFundMe page. Annabel Griffiths is listed as the organiser.

About cycling & running in Plymouth

Plymouth Training Notes

Running: Locals build base miles through Central Park, Saltram estate, West Park, and the Hoe when the wind behaves. Central Park keeps intervals simple, and Saltram gives a steady green loop when legs need Z2. Plymouth Musketeers Running Club brings the Thursday 19:00 crew, and Plymouth Harriers, Plymouth Coasters, Plymouth Striders, Plymstock Road Runners, and Tamar Trotters give you plenty of pace groups. Run Plymouth Half Marathon starts and finishes on Plymouth Hoe Promenade. Plymouth 10K starts on the Hoe and keeps the city centre sharp. Plymouth Harriers Summer 5 works as a fast anchor event.

Cycling: Plym Valley Trail gives cyclists the easy spin, and the Plym Valley Urban Loop runs 24 miles from Cann Woods car park through forests, old railway lines, and inner-city cycle routes. Plymouth Cycling Club meets every Sunday morning, weather permitting, with the A Group riding 30-45 miles and the B Group riding up to 20-35 miles. Devon Dinger 200 sits as the anchor event. Dartmoor holds the real climbs, and Haytor Triple packs 1,200 metres into 58 kilometres. Dartmoor Way carries 2,700 metres over 95 miles, so locals save legs for grinding up the local climbs.

Season: Spring, Summer, and Autumn give Plymouth the best rhythm for running and riding. Summer brings long coastal evenings, and Plymouth gets average annual sunshine totals over 1,600 hours when the Azores High pushes north-east towards the UK. Locals use those months for base miles, crit legs, gran fondo prep, and steady laps round Burrator Reservoir. Winter stays workable because Plymouth is one of the warmest UK cities in winter. Winter lows average around 1°C, and snow usually falls in small amounts. Dartmoor gravel and green lanes can turn very muddy after rain.
