Cameron Ponder Cycling Classic

The Cameron Ponder Cycling Classic begins and ends at 631 N. Miles Street in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, on a Saturday in October. This supported road cycling event offers four distances: a 109.54-mile century, a 109.54 km metric century, a 29.54-mile half-metric, and the 9.54-mile Trooper Ponder Honor Ride. The recurring number 954 is Trooper Cameron Ponder’s badge number, reflected in the registration fees: $59.54 for the two longest rides, $39.54 for the half-metric, and $29.54 for the honor ride. The routes travel onto rural roads in Central Kentucky, with a Kentucky State Police escort guiding participants out of Elizabethtown. SAG stops are staffed by first responders, their families, and local civic groups, aligning with the event’s mission to honor Kentucky State Trooper Ponder and raise funds for the KSP Trooper Ponder Memorial Scholarship. Each registration includes a $9.54 donation to the memorial fund, which has funded at least one scholarship in each of the event’s first three years. As part of the Kentucky Cycling Challenge, the ride attracts participants accumulating state miles and those supporting the Ponder family and first responders.

Hardin County Fair 4-H 5K Run/Walk

The Hardin County Fair 4-H 5K Run/Walk is a family-friendly 5K at the Hardin County Fairgrounds in Glendale, Kentucky, held during Hardin County Fair Week. It starts early in the morning and is built for both runners and walkers, with kids under 9 entering free and lower pricing for older children and teens. The course uses a mix of trail, gravel, and asphalt, so it feels more like a fairgrounds loop than a standard road race. Participants pass through fair areas such as the midway and motorsports arena, and the event raises money for Hardin County 4-H, which runs youth programs in areas like horses, livestock, dogs, shooting sports, beekeeping, rabbits and poultry, cooking, sewing, gardening, and robotics.

About cycling & running in Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown Training Notes

Running: Locals keep Freeman Lake Park as the easy meeting spot for base miles, lake laps, and steady Z2. The loop has 44 m of gain, so it works for a clean long run without much drama. The Nature Park and Elizabethtown Sports Park Perimeter Trail add softer options when legs feel cooked. Weekly Run/Walking Group meets in Elizabethtown on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 PM, and Saturdays at 9 AM. Running Soles sits at 16 Public Square. Etown Trail Classic and Hardin-Meade Endurance Run are the anchor events.

Cycling: Local riders use Buffalo Lake when they want dirt, singletrack, and a little cyclocross feel without leaving town. Buffalo Lake Trail starts downtown, and locals call it challenging but so much fun. Elizabethtown Gravel/Unpaved Cycling route gives riders 10.4 km with 100 m of gain, 101 m of loss, and a max grade of 6.5%. The climbs live in those short rises, not big mountains. Cameron Ponder Cycling Classic is the anchor race name here. The brief names no cycling club, so the riding scene reads more like small crews and route-sharing.

Season: Spring and fall are the best training months because the city sits at 100 m and the weather lets runners and riders stack steady weeks. Summer brings hot, humid air, so locals move intervals early, keep easy runs honest, and treat Z2 rides like maintenance work. Freeman Lake Park and Buffalo Lake still work in summer because shade and water nearby help the routine. Winter stays generally mild to cool, so both sports keep going. Runners lean on roads, park loops, and 5K fitness, while riders watch trail conditions and use gravel when singletrack needs a break.
