Aloha Run San Diego

The Aloha Run San Diego offers a 5K and 10K run/walk at Tecolote Shores Park on Mission Bay. Both distances follow a flat waterfront course. The 10K begins in the early morning, with the 5K starting shortly after. This event is designed for runners, joggers, and walkers, not exclusively competitive racers, and chip timing provides an official result for all participants. The course runs alongside Mission Bay, making it suitable for those aiming for a consistent pace and for families enjoying a shorter run or walk. All finishers will get collector medals and an Aloha Run beach T-shirt. The finish area features a luau, live entertainment, and island music. Awards are presented to the top three finishers in five-year age groups, and children under three may participate without registration.

Carmel Valley Trail Race

The Carmel Valley Trail Race guides runners through Gonzales Canyon Open Space, with the start and finish at Solana Ranch Park in San Diego’s Carmel Valley. This is a small annual trail event limited to 300 participants, offering 5K, 10K, and 10-mile distances. The 10K and 5K also function as championship qualifying races. The course starts and finishes on level terrain. However, the middle portion includes sufficient elevation gain to make the longer distances feel like a mountain race. Participants in the 10K and 10-mile races will encounter a section known as Puke Hill. The 5K route remains flat for those seeking a trail environment without significant climbing. This race is noted as San Diego’s sole trail race crossing Gonzales Canyon Open Space.

Lake Hodges Trail Festival

The Lake Hodges Trail Festival is an annual trail running and trail duathlon event. It takes place at the Piedras Pintadas Trailhead in San Diego, California, with the start and finish located at the trailhead. The event offers a 50K, 25K, 15K, 10K, 5K, Stroller Trail 5K, a 1 Mile Kid's Fun Run, and a run-bike-run Trail Duathlon. This festival is part of the Elevation Culture Race Series. The 50K serves as an entry-level ultramarathon. The 10K covers 1,000 feet of elevation gain, reaching Bernardo Mountain Peak. The 5K route runs along the Lake Hodges shore. The Kid's Fun Run is untimed and intended for children aged 10 and under. Participants include runners, duathletes, teams, families, and children. The event is cupless, requiring participants to provide their own hydration containers. All finishers get shirts and handcrafted wooden medals, with 10K Bernardo Challenge runners also receiving a summit coin.

About cycling & running in San Diego

Coastal Miles, Inland Climbs

Running: The route covers 92 km with 35 m of gain. The second route covers 28 km with only 3 m of gain. The third route covers 62 km with 106 m of gain. November Project meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:29 AM in Balboa Park, and PB Run Club meets weekly 5Ks at Bonita Cove. Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K, Liberty Station Relay and 5K, and Carmel Valley Trail Race work as anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride Mission Bay, Bayshore Bikeway, Ocean Beach, and Mission Trails when they want base miles close to town. There's no paved protected riding toward the interior. La Jolla and Torrey Pines State Park bring quiet coastal views, while Ocean Beach has that quirky hippy vibe. 8% for just under two miles. Mount Palomar gives the big day out, and riders climb the road up 6,140-foot Mount Palomar. Bike the Coast, Bike the Bay, San Diego Century, and Giro di San Diego GranFondo anchor the calendar.

Season: San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad works year-round because the weather stays close to 20°C and keeps both running and riding simple. Summer gives ideal outdoor conditions, so locals stack early boardwalk miles, Mission Bay loops, coastal Z2, and longer Pacific Coast Highway rides. Winter still gives excellent weather for running and cycling, and locals just shift effort toward track workouts, intervals, trail days, and steady base miles when mornings feel cooler. North County keeps the coastal rhythm in Carlsbad and Encinitas, while east routes through river trails, canyons, fire roads, and steep climbs stay useful when the group wants more bite.
