The Camelback Run

The Camelback Run, a long-standing race in Fremont, Ohio, is held at St. Joseph Bishop Hoffman High School on Croghan Street. This marks its 47th year, featuring a 10K, a 5K, and two children's races: a 2K and a quarter-mile Camel Calves run. The adult races begin at 8:00 AM, followed by the youth races at 9:30 AM, accommodating both serious road racers and families with young children. The race is supported by the Fremont Elite Runners Club, with awards extending beyond the top finishers. The 10K and 5K award prizes to overall male and female winners, Masters and Grand Masters runners, and the top three in age groups ranging from 14 and under to 75 and over. The 2K recognizes top male and female finishers, and all other children receive finisher awards. Runners who pre-register receive shirts; youth runners get youth-sized soft tees. Awards are presented around 10:00 AM, preceding post-race activities in downtown Fremont.

Waffle Iron Youth Run

The Waffle Iron Youth Run is a children's race in downtown Sandusky, Ohio, scheduled for the Saturday preceding the local IRONMAN 70.3 event. It begins on Columbus Avenue and divides young runners into three age categories: Little Dough Ball for ages 0-3 over 0.06 miles, Rising & Shining for ages 4-7 over a half mile, and Ready to Run for ages 8-12 over 1 mile. The course follows the Sandusky Bay waterfront. The youngest division starts first, followed by the middle group, and the 1-mile race concludes the morning's events. Packet pickup begins early under the marquee at the Sandusky State Theatre, adjacent to the IRONMAN finish line, linking the youth race closely to the larger triathlon weekend. Each registration provides a shirt, a medal, and a waffle from Sandusky's Wake Up & Waffle, contributing to the event's local character beyond its short race distances.

About cycling & running in Sandusky

Sandusky Training Notes

Running: Sandusky locals run the North Coast Inland Trail when they want clean base miles, because the paved rail line runs 28 miles. Osborn MetroPark gives runners a perimeter path a little over a mile and the Meadow Trail spans 1.5 miles. Castalia Quarry adds the Quarry Rim trail at around 2 miles and the Levee Loop at a tad over a mile. East Harbor State Park gives runners 10 miles through boardwalks, meadows, and a beach. Kelleys Island State Park adds the 5-mile East Quarry Trail loop. Fremont Elite Runners Club is the named club nearby. Waffle Iron Youth Run, OTOA 5K, and The Camelback Run keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Sandusky riders lean on the North Coast Inland Trail for Z2, steady spins, and low-drama base miles. The city has 478 km of tracked cycling distance, so locals can build routes without forcing it. One route runs 8 km with 137 m ascent. Another route runs 1 km with 183 m ascent for longer gran fondo legs. The climbs sit more in the mapped island and out-and-back routes than in town. 3 OHIO works as the big anchor event. The brief names no cycling club, so the route network does the talking.

Season: Fall gives Sandusky the best training window, with the driest season, clear warm days, and cool nights. Summer gives runners and riders average July highs of 27°C and lows of 18°C, so locals go early, keep bottles close, and save intervals for stable mornings. Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay keep the whole place feeling coastal, especially around Downtown district and the shoreline routes. Winter changes the plan fast, because January averages a 1°C high and a -7°C low. Sandusky averages 76 cm of snow per winter, so Z2 shifts indoors, trail shoes get picked carefully, and cyclocross grit helps.
