The Santa Clara Valley is dead flat and perfect for speed work—runners lap the Baylands trails and canal paths around San Jose, while the Mother's Day Virtual 5K draws local racers. Cyclists dominate here: the Kelyn Akuna Classic is a punishing 159km road race, and the Baylands offer easy cruising for base-building before heading into the Santa Cruz Mountains 30km south for sustained climbs to 600m.
