Chicago's running is built on the lakefront—the flat 26.2-mile Chicago Marathon course hugs Lake Michigan from downtown to 35th Street and back, drawing 45,000 runners each October. Cyclists have it easier: the 160km Le Tour de Shore loops the entire shoreline through the metro area, while serious gravel and road riders head 80km southeast to the dunes and rolling terrain around Indiana, or west into the Prairie View and Moraine Hills for sustained climbing. The metro's sprawl means most training happens on the lakefront path or in one of the dozen forest preserves within 30km.
