Fifth Season Races
The Fifth Season Races marked the fifth season of FIA Formula One motor racing. The World Championship of Drivers spanned eight races from May to October. This was an early period for Formula One; the championship was only in its second edition. The Indianapolis 500 was included in the points, and several additional Formula One races were held outside the championship. This season featured a rivalry between Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, with Juan Manuel Fangio driving for Alfa Romeo and competing against the reigning champion Nino Farina, who was his teammate. Fangio secured his first Drivers' Championship, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Alberto Ascari and José Froilán González. Alfa Romeo won the title with cars that had origins in the pre-war era, at a time when several teams were still utilizing chassis from before World War II. This made the season feel like the conclusion of an old era as much as the beginning of Fangio's dominant period, as rule changes for the subsequent season would render many of those older cars obsolete. The field included major factory teams alongside smaller entrants: Ferrari fielded Ascari, Luigi Villoresi, Piero Taruffi, and González, while Talbot-Lago, Maserati, HWM-Alta, Simca-Gordini, Veritas, and private Ferrari entries completed the lineup.
