El Paso running is desert-fast on paved loops through Franklin Mountains State Park and along the Rio Grande floodplain, with minimal elevation change until you venture into the foothills. Cyclists have genuine terrain here: the Bike the 915 gravel series and Rio Bravo Gravel Grind offer technical riding through the Chihuahuan Desert scrubland east and north of the city, while road riders tackle the longer El Paso Puzzler route that climbs into the mountains surrounding the valley floor at 650m elevation. Heat and altitude (El Paso sits at 1,140m) shape the training window — early morning and winter months are prime.
