Itacaré Training Notes
Running: Itacaré gives runners a coastal base where the Rio de Contas meets the Atlantic. Locals keep it simple and run beaches, trails, and Atlantic Forest edges when they want Z2 with a view. The Itacaré Run Challenge anchors the calendar in July, and the race gives you 7 km through the natural side of town. Runners use that event like a sharp check-in, not a big-city spectacle. Yandê Itacaré Institute belongs more to canoeing than running, but locals know it as part of the small sports scene here.
Cycling: Itacaré gives riders country roads, cocoa-zone miles, and plenty of unpaved work. The Cocoa Route from Ilhéus links Ilhéus, Serra Grande, and Itacaré, so locals use it for base miles with Atlantic Forest and cocoa plantations in the mix. Barra Grande x Itacaré gives gravel riders 49 km and climbs 226 m, with 41.9 km unpaved and 7.1 km paved. The climbs sit in the rolling road changes near Serra do Conduru State Park and the rural zones. Riders here talk less crit and more gran fondo legs, singletrack feel, and steady intervals.
Season: July is the clean anchor month because the Itacaré Run Challenge lands there and gives runners a real target. Summer keeps the training coastal and green, with Serra do Conduru State Park and Baía de Camamu Environmental Protection Area shaping the backdrop. Locals still ride and run by the Atlantic, the Rio de Contas, and the cocoa side when the days feel heavy. Winter shifts the mood toward the cocoa zone south of Salvador, so both sports feel steadier, less like beach-trip fitness and more like proper Z2 blocks.
