Rio Base Miles
Running: Locals run the wide beach paths first: Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, and the Calcadao Leme-Leblon when they want easy Z2 with breeze on the face. Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas gives almost 8km for steady laps, and Aterro do Flamengo gives tree-lined lanes when the sun gets too warm. Maracana stadium has a 1.8km track around it for short intervals. Founders Running Club meets weekly and usually finishes with coffee and conversations. Corre, Cleo keeps the Lagoa crew open and easy to find. Maratona do Rio is the anchor event, with Meia Maratona da Reserva and Night Run in the mix.
Cycling: Locals ride beach strips from Arpoador to Leblon and Barra to Reserva when the plan is flat base miles. The city has closed stretches where cyclists can train car-free between 4am and 5:30am, and Aterro do Flamengo to Santos Dumont airport gets early Sunday action. Rio Cycling Club runs five weekly rides with four pelotons, support vehicles, pacers, and mechanics. Assessorias fill the gaps for group rides. Floresta da Tijuca holds the real climbing, with gradients reaching 14 per cent. Rua Alice in Laranjeiras and Pacheco Leao start the better climbs, while Christ the Redeemer, Vista Chinesa, Mesa do Imperador, and Guarana Quente keep riders honest. IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro is the anchor race.
Season: June and July give runners the cleanest race targets in this brief, with Maratona do Rio on June 3 to 7 in 2026 and Asics Golden Run listed for July. Summer changes the clock more than the route, because late morning and early afternoon get very very very warm. Locals move beach runs, Aterro laps, and Lagoa loops early when they want comfort. Cyclists also start early, because the normal window for better climbing sits between 5 and 10am. Winter changes the calendar more than the terrain, with Circuito das Estacoes 2026 - Inverno - Rio de Janeiro joining the race list. The same coastal paths, climbs, and singletrack stay in play.
