ADAC Marathon Hannover

The ADAC Marathon Hannover is a 42.195-kilometer road race held annually in Hannover, the capital of Lower Saxony in northern Germany. First run in 1991, with occasional pandemic interruptions, it typically takes place on a Sunday in April, having previously been scheduled for the first Sunday in May. This event is among Germany's largest road races, attracting participants from abroad alongside local and club runners. Eichels Event GmbH manages the event, while the Lower Saxony Athletics Association oversees the athletic aspects. The race's past includes notable moments beyond standard results. An early running served as the German Marathon Championship, with Birgit Jerschabek and Kurt Stenzel claiming the women's and men's titles amidst fields already numbering in the thousands. Prize money has also been a factor, ranging from a car for the fastest finishers to monetary bonuses in Marks and euros. A peculiar incident occurred when the lead vehicle took a wrong turn around the 12.5-kilometer mark, preventing winner Andrej Hardsejeu from contending for a course-record bonus. The current course records stand at 2:06:05 for men, set by Amanal Petros, and 2:21:26 for women, set by Domenika Mayer.

40. Durch das Calenberger Land

The Durch das Calenberger Land begins at Grundschule Wettbergen in Hannover, with cyclists departing between 09:30 and 10:00 on a Sunday morning. This event is a Radtourenfahrt, a non-competitive road cycling tour, organized by Radsportgemeinschaft Hannover e.V. under the Niedersachsen cycling association. Riders may select routes of 41, 76, 112, or 129 km, accommodating both short local rides and longer excursions. The 41 km route is flat with approximately 200 m of elevation gain, the 76 km route has rolling terrain with about 500 m, and the two longer routes are more challenging, reaching around 1,000 m on the 129 km option. The courses are only partially marked, and the “S” designation indicates it also qualifies as a Sternfahrt, allowing participants to join via a star-ride format.

About cycling & running in Hanover

Hannover Training Notes

Running: Locals run Hannover through green space first. Eilenriede gives easy shade for Z2, and Maschsee Runde works for steady laps when the paths are not packed. Maschsee Strandbad anchors Frauenlauf Hannover fem.run, so that side of the lake always feels like race ground. Leinetal and the Fösselauf course keep things flat and green through Linden/Limmer and Ahlem-Badenstedt-Davenstedt. Hannover 96, DSV 78 Hanover, SC Germania List, SV Odin Hanover, DRC Hanover, SG 78/08 Hanover, and the Club for health-conscious endurance sports give runners club options. ADAC Marathon Hannover is the anchor event, with a route that has only 19m elevation difference.

Cycling: Locals ride base miles on the Julius-Trip-Ring, because the 24km loop links Maschsee, the Leine and Ihme rivers, Herrenhausen, Kleingärten, and Eilenriede. The Grüner Ring Hannover 62km gives a bigger day without leaving the city feel. Hannoverscher Radsport Club von 1912 e.V. is the name on the road scene, and its Thursday E-Cycling Serie at 19:45 carries winter form until the end of March. Marienburg Castle and Celle make good out-and-back rides. Deister gives the climbing, and locals point you through the Nienstädter Pass and back over Springe.

Season: June feels sharp because the Mittsommernachtslauf Hannover gives runners 8 to 23 kilometers and the city stays light late. September feels busy because Magenta Lauf and the RTF & Gravelride Paschenburg sit in the calendar. Summer training stays simple around Maschsee, Eilenriede, Leinemasch, and the rivers, with intervals early and Z2 when the paths open up. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. The 5. O-CTF Winter Kartoffeltour in November keeps cyclocross and gravel legs awake, and the Mühlenberger Nikolauslauf in December keeps runners honest when the base miles get colder.
