Trofeo Laigueglia is a men’s one-day road cycling race that takes place near Laigueglia, on Italy’s Ligurian coast, in February or March. It is a line race for Elite and Under-23 men, meaning riders start together and compete for a single finish, rather than participating in a stage race or time trial. The Municipality of Laigueglia is the organizer, and the event is part of the UCI ProSeries calendar, having previously been included in the UCI Europe Tour. The race was established to attract visitors to Laigueglia during the spring, outside the main summer tourist period. It started as an early-season Italian classic and soon attracted notable cyclists. Guido Neri won the inaugural edition, and subsequent winners such as Franco Bitossi, Michele Dancelli, Italo Zilioli, Eddy Merckx, Gianbattista Baronchelli, and Roger De Vlaeminck have enhanced its historical significance. Merckx was defeated in a sprint one year but returned to win the following two editions. Filippo Pozzato holds the record for the most victories with three.
The Santa Cross Triathlon is a multi-sport race held in Santa Margherita Ligure, on the Ligurian coast near Genoa, scheduled for late May. The format deviates from a standard swim-bike-run: it includes a 1 km swim, a 4 km kayak leg, and a 6 km trail run with 300 m of elevation gain. The course requires proficiency in three distinct disciplines within a condensed race: open-water swimming, paddling, and a brief, steep trail run. The official race website is Rea Palus Race, and event listings categorize it among local endurance events, not as a standalone city road race.
Running: Locals run Genova by mood: flat sea legs on Corso Italia, sharper coastal rhythm on Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi, and easy base miles out at Fascia di Rispetto di Pra'. The historic centre gives you a 7-kilometer city tour route through caruggi, piazze, and tight turns. Parco Verde di GREAT Campus gives you a 3 km paved, flat loop when you want no drama. Parco delle Mura has 4 km of dirt loops with moderate inclines. Genoa Running, Athletic Genova, and Maratoneti Genovesi keep the scene visible. Il Miglio Blu, Traversata della ValBisagno, Mezza di Genova, and Salita alla Guardia anchor the calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride out of town fast because Genova rises straight from the Ligurian Sea into the Apennine Mountains. The coastal road from Voltri to Varazze is flat to rolling, while Monte Gazzo, Monte Figogna, Gaiazza, and the Salita alla Guardia give you climbing. Le Manie near Finale Ligure gives gradients from 5% to 9%, so nobody treats it like coffee spin terrain. Area 24 gives 28 km from Imperia to San Lorenzo al Mare for cleaner Z2. Cocchi Cicli keeps riders sorted in town. Milan-Sanremo, Trofeo Laigueglia, and Granfondo Internazionale Laigueglia set the racing tone.
Season: April, May, June, July, August, September, and October are the good months, with spring and autumn feeling best for intervals, long runs, and gran fondo prep. July and August bring warm days, warm nights, and sea time after training, so locals go early or keep the work coastal. The city centre stays punchy because the caruggi and crêuze always push you uphill sooner than planned. Winter keeps both sports alive, but northern winds change the feel fast. Runners use flatter loops and the Mura, while riders chase coastal Z2 and choose climbing days with care.
