Tri the Parks - Don Carter State Park Sprint

The Don Carter State Park Sprint, a Tri the Parks event, takes place at Don Carter State Park in Gainesville, Georgia, offering sprint triathlon, duathlon, and aquabike races. Race morning begins early: the park opens at 6:00 a.m., check-in closes at 7:30, athletes proceed to the beach for swim seeding and the duathlon start, and racing commences at 8:00. The event is limited to 300 participants and is open to athletes aged 9 and older. The triathlon swim covers 600 meters, beginning at the dock and concluding at the boat ramp; swim caps are provided to help sort athletes by their starting position. The aquabike course includes a 17.7 km bike segment with 149 meters of elevation gain. The race organization is practical: bike racks correspond to assigned race numbers, and athletes receive body marking with their race number and age. The broader Tri the Parks series, organized by a Marietta, Georgia-based group, also features events at John Tanner State Park and Lake Lanier Olympic Park.

About cycling & running in Gainesville

Gainesville Training Notes

Running: Locals run Gainesville like a foothills town with Lake Lanier close by and trees on most edges. Lanier Running Club keeps the week steady with Tuesday at College Square Park in Oakwood, Thursday at NoFo Gainesville, and Saturday at Riverside Academy. Runners and walkers of all paces are welcome, and that makes it easy to find Z2 miles or a sharper tempo route from house. You can knock out 35 km with 230 m of gain when you want real base miles. Super Speeder 5K, Angel Dash, Cops & Gobblers 5K, and Braselton LifePath 8k/5k work as anchor races.

Cycling: Cyclists get plenty without leaving town. Chicken City Cyclists roll every Wednesday evening at 6pm from Frances Meadows Aquatic Center for a group ride through Gainesville. from Corinth Baptist Church, plus Tuesday and Thursday rides from Hopewell Church Road and Dewberry Baptist Church. Gainesville has 19 cycle routes with 511 km tracked, so base miles are easy to stack. The Chicopee Woods loop runs 8 km with 104 meters of climb, and SORBA at Lake Lanier has history there. The climbs sit in rolling hills and pastures north and south, with gravel on Eston Smith Road, Baker Rd, and Cooper Bridge Rd.

Season: June gives Gainesville its best window when the legs like warm mornings and the roads still feel open. Summer brings hot, humid conditions, so locals start early, keep intervals short, and save longer Z2 for shaded stretches near Lake Lanier or wooded roads. Cyclists use the same rule and finish before the heat turns every hill into extra work. Winter brings cool to mild temperatures, so running stays consistent and riding stays possible with a later start. The city centre, Oakwood, Braselton, Pendergrass, and Flowery Branch all keep routes usable when race season quiets down.
