Patuxent River Kids Triathlon

The Patuxent River Kids Triathlon is held at 22889 Wildewood Drive in California, Maryland. This short swim-bike-run event takes place on a Saturday morning and is presented by the MCAA John Glenn Squadron Foundation. It is open to participants aged 3 to 17, welcoming first-time racers and children seeking a non-competitive event. Distances are adjusted for age groups. The Tiny Tri includes a 12.5-yard swim, 75-yard bike ride, and 50-yard run. The oldest participants will complete a 300-meter swim, a 6.4-mile bike course, and a 1.5-mile run. A child's race age is determined by their age on December 31st of the race year. A small discount is offered for families registering multiple children, excluding the Tiny Tri. All participants require a USA Triathlon membership. A local tradition involves a race-shirt design contest, where children can submit paper or digital artwork for the shirt's front; the winning design earns the artist a free race entry.

Turkey Trot

On Thanksgiving morning in the United States, a turkey trot typically signifies a local road race held before the evening meal, most commonly a 5K. This designation applies to hundreds of distinct events, not a single organized tour, and these races now occur in all 50 states, with Florida hosting the most. Some are certified USA Track & Field road races ranging from 5K to a half marathon, while others are casual fun runs from one mile to 5K. A few races held around Christmas in the United Kingdom share the name, as turkey is also associated with the holiday meal there. The usual course involves simple road running, with the 5K comprising over 90% of events. Consequently, the participants generally include a mix of walkers, novices, club athletes, families, and individuals running to benefit a charity. Costumes are a common element, particularly full turkey attire, and Molly Seidel once achieved a speed record while costumed as a turkey at the Berbee Derby in Wisconsin. The Buffalo Turkey Trot, conducted annually since 1896, stands as the oldest recorded event of its kind, attracting approximately 14,000 participants each year. Thanksgiving racing also has a place in the history of longer American road races: Atlanta once featured a full marathon on the holiday before changing to a half marathon, and both Yonkers and Detroit initiated their marathons on Thanksgiving before relocating them.

About cycling & running in Lexington Park

Lexington Park Training Notes

Running: Lexington Park runners get most of their steady miles around Salem State Forest and St. Mary's Lake. Locals use the St. Locals use the St. 5 km of Intermediate trail instead of another road shuffle. Forest Road, Pine Trail, Plantation Trail, and East Lake Trail keep easy Z2 days simple. Town Creek gives the Robles Run 4 Change 5K a proper neighborhood feel. Leonard's Grant carries The 14th Annual Life's Good in LG 5k Race and Fun Run. Jefferson Patterson Park brings the Neon Nights 5K when the legs want something less serious.

Cycling: Patuxent Velo Cycling is the name locals know for road rides in St Mary's and Calvert Counties. Riders use the St Mary's City loop for 16 km with 82 m of gain when the day needs base miles. Chaptico Loop gives 41 km with 245 m of gain, and the Hills and buggies route stretches the work to 88 km with 534 m of gain. Rural roads with buggy-wide shoulders make cycling a joy here. Inclines, winding roads, and broad stretches through farmland keep things relaxed. Locke's Hill brings the sting with a 20+% grade.

Season: Summer gives Lexington Park its hot, humid training block, so locals run early and keep intervals honest. Cyclists use those same mornings for Z2, then save harder pulls for days when the air feels lighter. St. Mary's Lake and Salem State Forest stay useful when the sun is high, especially for shaded trail miles and dirt-path spins. Winter stays mild, so both sports keep moving instead of shutting down. Runners lean on 5K season rhythm, and riders keep base miles rolling on the rural loops. Cyclocross legs still like the gravel bits when the roads feel too routine.
