About cycling & running in TampaTampa Bay Training Notes
Running: Locals run Bayshore Boulevard for steady Z2, tempo work, and race-day legs because the sidewalk just keeps going along Tampa Bay. The route gives you 5 miles with downtown views. St. Petersburg Pier, Vinoy & Waterfront Parks, Fort DeSoto Park, Ream Wilson Trail, and Courtney Campbell Causeway Path fill the rotation. Run Tampa handles Saturday and Sunday mornings, while St. Pete Running Company, Off Balanced Run Club, Pinellas Run Club, and Weedon Island Preserve Parkrun keep the St. Pete-Clearwater side moving. Gasparilla Run, Tampa's Turkey Trot, and St. Pete Run Fest are the anchor races.
Cycling: Locals ride flat and long first, then go hunting for rollers north and inland. The climb is 2 km with 169 m from St. Petersburg toward Tarpon Springs. Petersburg toward Tarpon Springs. Courtney Campbell Causeway Trail gives 33 km with 23 m of elevation and big Old Tampa Bay views. Clearwater South Loop, Wall Springs Park Loop, and the Cross Bay Ferry to Tampa - Davis Island - Ybor Loop make good base miles. St. Petersburg Bicycle Club rolls Saturday mornings from North Shore Aquatic Complex. Mondon Hill Road, Bailey Hill Road, and San Antonio bring the climbing at 9 km with 320 m.
Season: Winter and spring are the sweet spot for both sports, with drier days, sunny miles, and enough warmth for early starts without drama. Summer turns training into a timing game, because locals ride and run early before hot, humid afternoons and daily thunderstorms. Courtney Campbell Causeway Path and the water routes can bake during spring and summer with no shade on the water. Run Tampa shifts Thursday evenings from Hyde Park Village from mid-October through mid-March, and St. Petersburg Bicycle Club moves its Saturday start from 8:00 am in late April to 8:30 am by late October. Winter keeps Z2 blocks, intervals, and long rides easier to stack.
