Bismarck sits on the Missouri River in the Great Plains with flat to rolling terrain that draws gravel cyclists to the surrounding Badlands and prairie. The Lyons-Heart Gravel Classic and AlKEMist Gravel Fest are the region's marquee gravel events, both offering 80–160km routes through North Dakota's mixed terrain. Runners have the Bismarck Marathon and Dirt Kicker Charity Run as local staples, with most courses following the river valley and prairie roads at around 500m elevation.
