Manchester's running scene is canal-flat—the Heaton Park 5K and Bridgewater towpath circuits dominate local training—but serious hill work lies 25–40km east in the Peak District foothills around Macclesfield and Buxton. Cyclists treat the city as a launchpad: the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride is the signature event, and sportives like the Bocholt Sportive (85.4km) head south into the rolling Cheshire lanes, while time trialists use the fast flatlands north toward Wigan for the Congleton CC circuit races.
