Winnipeg's running scene centers on the flat, fast Manitoba Marathon, which follows the Red River through downtown and south toward Assiniboine Park. The city is pancake-flat at 210m elevation, ideal for speedwork, though winters are brutal (lows near -20°C January–February). Cyclists favour the extensive Pathway system along the Red and Assiniboine Rivers for commuting and easy miles, with gravel riding in the surrounding prairie and occasional dirt roads north toward Lac du Bonnet for variety.
