Edmonton's river valley dominates running and cycling here—the North Saskatchewan River sits 100m below the city and its trails form the spine of local training. The Run the River Spring Challenge and Tuff Pumpkin Edmonton draw regular participants through the river corridor and surrounding parks, while serious cyclists push south into the foothills around Terwillegar or west toward the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series courses in Goldbar and Devon for elevation gain. Winter running is flat and fast along the valley floor; summer hill work means heading 30–40km outside the city.
