Rapid Creek Track Club Half Marathon

The Rapid Creek Track Club Half Marathon is a half marathon held in August, beginning and ending at Darwin SLSC. The Rapid Creek Track Club, a Northern Territory club founded by friends aiming to improve their speed and foster a more robust distance-running community, organizes the event. The race is part of a club culture focused on consistent training, extending beyond race day. RCTC conducts track sessions at Marrara Athletics Track, social and long runs originating from Rapid Creek Bridge, and shorter track meets ranging from 1500m to 5000m. Its half marathon attracts a few hundred finishers, featuring swift front-runners and numerous adult club members striving for personal bests.

Darwin Triathlon Club Mixed Relay Triathlon

The Darwin Triathlon Club Mixed Relay Triathlon is a club relay held at Lake Alexander in East Point, Northern Territory. Each team consists of four individuals, with two male and two female participants. Every athlete completes a short triathlon leg before passing to the next teammate. The format is Enticer distance, meaning each leg is compact: a 300 m lake swim, a 5 km bike ride, and a 1 km run. The race is organised by Darwin Triathlon Club and sanctioned by AusTriathlon. Lake Alexander serves as the event's hub, located on Alec Fong Lim Drive. The swim takes place in sheltered lake waters, avoiding open sea. The short legs make the relay suitable for newer triathletes, and the mixed-team structure provides club members with a race focused on pacing, order, and teamwork rather than a lengthy solo effort.

Wingello Trail Festival

Wingello Trail Festival is a Sunday trail-running event held in Wingello, Australia, within Wingello State Forest. The race hub is at the Wingello State Park camp HQ, located approximately 5 km from the Hume Highway, about halfway between Sydney and Canberra. Runners can select from 50 km, 25 km, 15 km, or 6.4 km distances, accommodating both ultra-distance participants and those seeking a shorter forest run. The course remains within the state forest, avoiding town streets, which establishes the event's distinct bush-trail character. Elite Energy Events organizes the festival, with the local Wingello RFS involved in the event's narrative. Organizers refer to it as a reunion for trail runners, and Wingello State Forest holds historical significance in the sport, once noted as a prime location for trail running.

About cycling & running in Darwin

Darwin Training Notes

Running: Locals keep the running simple and early around Nightcliff, East Point, Cullen Bay, Lee Point, and Lake Alexander. The Nightcliff loop is 14 km and gains +47 m, so it works for steady base miles. The Cullen Bay loop is 09 km and gains +1 m, so it is proper flat Z2. has Saturday runs from out front of the Parap Bakery at 6am sharp, and they don't wait. Rapid Creek Track Club adds more race legs. NT City2Surf, Darwin Runners & Walkers Half Marathon, and Rapid Creek Track Club Half Marathon anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Darwin gives riders approximately 70km of on-road cycleways and shared paths, with pedestrians having the right of way. The race circuit has 82 km laps. Darwin Off Road Cyclists (DORC) points dirt riders toward Charles Darwin National Park, Casuarina Coastal Reserve, and Howard Springs singletrack. The hills sit through Palmerston and Berrimah, with Darwin High School hill, Gardens Hill Cres, Cullen Bay hill, Doctor's Gully hill, and Hughes Ave for HuMpS. NT Standard Distance and Ride Against Cancer NT Criterium Race give the season proper targets.

Season: June to August is the sweet spot, and locals use it for longer runs, bigger rides, cleaner intervals, and less negotiation with the weather. November to March is the wet season, and Darwin gets 80-90% of yearly rainfall while average daily temperatures sit around 30C. The city stays pretty hot and sticky then, and the night does not cool down much, so early starts matter for both running and riding. Winter stays warm, and the dry season opens up the Rail Trail, shared paths, beach-side loops, crit nights, and trail sessions with a lot less fuss.
