Lake Mac Run

Lake Mac Run starts and finishes at Warners Bay on the Lake Macquarie foreshore in New South Wales. Participants can choose a half marathon, a 10.5km run, or a 4km Family Scamper, catering to both regular runners and families. The race uses a traffic-free route with a flat profile and a smooth running surface, with no major hills. The course runs between Warners Bay and Speers Point beside Lake Macquarie. Half marathoners complete two and a quarter loops, the 10.5km runners complete one full loop, and the Family Scamper runs out 2km before turning back. The event attracts up to about 1,000 participants and has the feel of a local community race, with toilets, parking, medical support, hydration stations, and food and drink available around the event area.

Newcastle Cross Country 20: Blackbutt Reserve

Newcastle Cross Country features a Blackbutt Reserve event in the Hunter Region, beginning on Mahogany Drive near the Queens Road intersection. This is a winter trail run, with a hilly course and significant elevation changes that distinguish it from a flat road race. The broader series rotates through Newcastle and surrounding Hunter locations, offering participants varied surfaces, distances, and course profiles throughout the season. At Blackbutt Reserve, the primary appeal lies in the challenging terrain: trail running, ascents, and varied ground conditions instead of a simple, quick circuit. Other events are held at Ash Island, with set distances like 2.5K, 6K, and 9.8K crossing natural paths near the Hunter River, and participants are assigned to ability groups. Newcomers can be placed in an appropriate grade, while seasoned cross-country athletes can still find competitive challenges. The club concludes its series with a Relay & Presentation event, featuring a mixed relay over a 2K course.

Newcastle Cross Country 12: Botanic Gardens

Newcastle Cross Country 12: Botanic Gardens is a winter cross-country run held at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens in Heatherbrae, New South Wales. It is part of the Newcastle Cross Country Club’s weekly series, which rotates between local venues instead of using a single course. This event features a mixed-surface, rolling run in cool weather, suitable for runners seeking a challenge beyond a flat road race. The Botanic Gardens course incorporates varied terrain and elevation changes to test runners' stamina, footing, and agility. The club format accommodates competitive runners, those new to the sport, and individuals who enjoy running outdoors. Other Newcastle Cross Country events utilize graded groups and multiple distances, allowing participants to compete against others of comparable skill. Past events have taken place at locations like Ash Island on the Hunter River and Blackbutt Reserve, with the season concluding with a short mixed relay and awards ceremony.

About cycling & running in Newcastle

Newcastle Training Notes

Running: Locals run the coast first, because Bathers Way gives you 6km one way from Merewether Baths to Nobbys Beach with sea breeze and enough bite for intervals. The Fernleigh Track gives runners 15km one way from Adamstown to Belmont on a quiet, history-rich path. The Fernleigh Track gives runners 15km one way from Adamstown to Belmont on a quiet, history-rich path, or 8km return if you turn around halfway. Newcastle Flyers Runners Club owns Tuesday intervals and Sunday long runs from Merewether Surf House. Bar Beach Run Club, Never Run Club, Newy Parkrun, Blackbutt Parkrun, and Kweens Run Club fill the week. Fernleigh15 and Newcastle Cross Country 20: Blackbutt Reserve give the calendar its anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride Fernleigh for base miles, coffee legs, and easy Z2, because the track runs 15km one way and stays flat to moderate. The city centre loop runs 2km one way when you need a quick spin. Stockton Foreshore Walk gives 7km one way on a flat shared path. Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club runs weekend road racing at Hunter Economic Zone, track racing at Adamstown velodrome, and the odd crit or cyclocross hit-out. Mount Sugarloaf brings the harder climbing. Mount Sugarloaf is 3km with 1,222m elevation, while Green Point Reserve throws two steep hills into the Belmont - Wallsend - Fernleigh Track Loop.

Season: Spring and autumn suit Newcastle best, because the weather lets runners and riders stack base miles without fighting the day. Summer brings warm temperatures and sunny days, so locals shift starts early and lean into Bathers Way, Nobbys Beach, Bar Beach, Merewether, and the foreshore. Newcastle Flyers Long Run Sunday leaves at 6:00am, and that timing makes sense when the heat turns up. Winter stays workable for both sports, but the coast can be cool and windy. Locals keep the layers handy, ride the Fernleigh Track, run Newy Parkrun or Blackbutt Parkrun, and save the punchier efforts for calmer mornings.
