About cycling & running in TownsvilleTownsville Training Notes
Running: Locals run The Strand, Castle Hill, South Townsville, Ross River, and the parkland loops when they want honest base miles. Townsville Road Runners meet every Saturday morning, rain, hail or shine, and the club moves competition runs across flat paths, hills, trails, and road running. Peter Lahiff Around the Hill gives them 12km. The hill run starts from Kennedy Street in North Ward and covers 5km. The anchor events are Townsville Running Festival, Magnetic 10in10 Marathon Event, Magnetic 7in7 Marathon Event, and the Castle Hill Foot Race.
Cycling: Locals ride the Ross River ride for Z2 because the route is 90% bike path and Mount Stuart keeps getting closer. Castle Hill Loop gives cyclists 27km including Pallarenda, and the bitumen and footpaths make it a proper intermediate hit. Castle Hill gives riders an 8 to 12 degree average gradient for about 15-30 minutes one way, and the top sits around 250m. Townsville Cycle Club Inc covers road and track racing for ages 5 and up from Idalia. Townsville Bunch Rides - Cycling in the North helps locals find wheels. Paluma Village sits after seventeen kilometres of winding mountain road.
Season: May to October gives runners and riders the best dry-season window, so locals stack base miles, intervals, and longer gran fondo-style days then. Summer heat and humidity can be challenging, so normal runners do it before work and cyclists roll early for the morning sea breeze. Locals slow down, stay hydrated, and find routes with breeze and shade. Winter brings southeast trade winds, mostly fine weather, blue skies, warm days, and cool nights. Townsville Road Runners keep the season from March to October, while winter makes Castle Hill, Ross River, The Strand, and Paluma feel easier to repeat.
