Wings for Life World Run München

The Wings for Life World Run Munich serves as Germany's main event for a worldwide charity run that takes place each May. Participants in Munich begin at the same time as runners on other courses globally. The Munich event is centered at Spiridon-Louis-Ring in the Olympic Park. Over 10,000 individuals participate across Germany. It accommodates all levels of runners: competitive athletes, casual joggers, wheelchair participants, groups of friends, and novices. The core principle is “Running for those who can't.” All registration fees directly support spinal cord research via the Wings for Life Foundation, with Red Bull covering operational expenses. The race format deviates from standard races like 5Ks, 10Ks, or marathons because of the absence of a fixed finish line. All participants start simultaneously. A Catcher Car begins its pursuit 30 minutes after the start, progressively closing in on the runners. When the car passes a runner, their participation concludes. Consequently, individual distances vary significantly, from a few kilometers for some to over 80 km for elite athletes, with Munich's results typically falling within this range. Individuals unable to attend in person can participate remotely using the app, which features a virtual Catcher Car and provides audio cues when a runner is caught. Collectively, the Wings for Life community has covered over seven million kilometers and generated approximately 30 million euros for scientific research. This initiative was established by Heinz Kinigadner and Dietrich Mateschitz to fund studies on spinal cord injuries and paraplegia.

Intersport Urban Trail Run München

The INTERSPORT Urban Trail Run is a running series across three German cities: Munich, Düsseldorf, and Dresden. It takes place in summer and early autumn and is now in its second edition. This series is designed for runners seeking a less predictable challenge than a typical road race. The Munich event includes Olympic elements and elevation changes, while the overall series incorporates city streets, stairways, parkland, and unique route selections, integrating each host city into the race. Each course offers a distinct character: Munich utilizes its Olympic Park location, Düsseldorf features an inventive path through the Rhine city, and Dresden combines its historic old town with a contemporary running style. Before and after the race, runners can try out various shoe models and engage with the event's community atmosphere and post-race activities. Participants are also given an energetics shirt, a starter kit with items from partners, and a finisher's medal.

About cycling & running in Munich

Munich Miles And Base Roads

Running: Locals run the Englischer Garten when they want easy Z2, because the park gives them 375 hectares and a clean 6 kilometer route from the bridge near the Eisbachwelle. The Isar River route starts and ends at Reichenbachbrücke, covers about 5 kilometers, and keeps the climbing light with about 15 meters up and 16 meters down. Nymphenburg Palace Park gives quieter winding paths, lakes, and small pagodas. Olympiapark brings hills, stairs, and 850,000 square meters of green space. runningsociety handles the sharp work with RS Fight, RS Power, and RS Longfight. München Marathon, SportScheck RUN München, Oktoberfestlauf München, and Winterlaufserie München anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride road bikes south when they want the usual group flow, because Perlacher Forst points straight toward Deining, Endlhausen, and Sauerlach. Munich to Dachau and Oberschleißheim and back stays relatively flat and easy, so it works for base miles. Munich - Ismanninger Speichersee - MUC - Freising and back also rides easy. Starnberger See, Ammersee, Wörthsee, and Munich - Tegernsee give longer tarmac days. The climbs sit toward Wallgau and Walchensee, behind Benedikbeuern, and around Achenpass/Achenkirch. Monaco Velo Club, Bici Bavarese, Pas Normal Studios Munich, Ciao Ciao, Straede Crew München, Sturmvogel, RCSchwalben, and RTC München shape the scene.

Season: July usually feels best for warm training, and late spring through summer gives the city its biggest shower-and-thunderstorm pattern. Locals still ride and run through it, because the cycle paths are everywhere and the parks drain the week into simple loops. Summer evenings work well for intervals in Olympiapark, Z2 along the Isar, and longer rides toward Starnberger See or Ammersee. January is the coolest month, and winter changes the rhythm more than the intent. Snow and ice can make cycling awkward, but the right tires can make it fun. Winter runners keep the steady work going, and November to February brings dark commutes during normal work hours.
