Einstein Marathon

The Einstein Marathon takes place on a September weekend in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. It is named for the city’s most famous scientific son and began in the Einstein Year. The primary events are the marathon and half marathon. The program also includes 10 km and 5 km runs, as well as inline skaters and handbike athletes competing over the half-marathon distance. By German standards, it attracts a large field, with the half marathon typically having more participants than the full marathon. The marathon and half marathon begin near the Donauhalle on Böfinger Straße. They follow routes that may vary annually before finishing at Münsterplatz, directly beneath Ulm Minster. The shorter running races also conclude at this square, making it the common finish line for many participants throughout the day. SSV Ulm 1846 hosts the event, and SUN Sportmanagement organizes it. The race has previously hosted national championship fields, including German marathon and half marathon championships, and Alina Reh set a German U23 half marathon record at this event.

Die kleine Laufnacht

Die kleine Laufnacht is a running event in Ulm, Germany, scheduled for late June. Its name translates to “the little running night.” The registration page frames it as a concise race-night option within the Ulm running community, distinct from a large race festival. The public race page is functional, consolidating registration, participant lists, results, and contact information. Results are provided via race|result. The broader event website also advertises the “Fit in den Frühling” fitness week, a program of spring sports courses that require pre-registration due to limited capacity and frequent sell-outs.

About cycling & running in Ulm

Ulm Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Danube first, then drift into Friedrichsau park when they want softer Z2 and no fuss. Beer Runner meets every Thursday at 18:30 at Bistro Ulmerufer, and the Beer Run route runs 7.5 kilometers along the Danube. Run Club Ulm meets every Wednesday at 19:00 at the Donauwiese in front of the Metzgerturm, and the Run Club route gives you 6 kilometers along the Danube. Donaurunning uses 5 kilometers through Friedrichsau and along the Danube. Park Run starts every Saturday at 9:00 in Friedrichsau. Einstein-Marathon and Die kleine Laufnacht Ulm sit as the anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride from the city because Ulm is a real route hub, not just a stop on a map. StadtRad-Route gives you 12 kilometers on green signs through both cities, parks, squares, Friedrichsau, and the Danube. Danube Cycle Path rolls about 600 kilometers through Ulm and Neu-Ulm, and the Danube-Lake Constance cycle path runs 156 kilometers from Ulm to Lake Constance. Iller cycle path adds 146 kilometers from the mouth of the Iller toward its source. SSV Ulm 1846, Ratiopharm Ulm, TSG Söflingen, ESC Ulm, and Post SV Ulm e.V. keep the club scene visible. The Swabian Alb holds the climbs north of town.

Season: May to August work best when locals want base miles, long rides, and steady running weeks. Summer reaches about 25°C, so the Danube, Friedrichsau, and early starts carry a lot of the training. May to August also bring the wettest stretch, but the city still rides well because the river routes stay simple and connected. Winter drops toward -2°C, and runners lean harder on Friedrichsau, the Danube paths, and club runs. Cyclists keep flatter Z2 on the Danube or Iller when the hills feel sharp, while the forests and hills east and west still suit tougher days, cyclocross moods, and singletrack legs.
