Hairy Helmet Relay

The Hairy Helmet Relay is a four-stage relay held in Darley Park, Derby, where each participant runs 2.1 miles. It is designed for mixed groups, not exclusively fast club teams, allowing beginners and regular racers to compete together. Teams may wear costumes or standard running attire, with the atmosphere leaning towards a social evening rather than a competitive championship. The short distances facilitate sharing the effort among friends, and previous results offer a benchmark for returning teams. Participants can also use the event to raise money for charity via GoFundMe.

Derwent Runners 4

The Derwent Runners 4 is a four-mile road race held at The County Ground in Derby. It takes place in the morning during the summer, a regular spot on the local race calendar. Derwent Runners, a Derby club, organizes the event from their base at Derby Rugby Club on Haslams Lane. The Derby Mile is also part of the event. The race is in its early stages after a successful first year, giving it the feel of a developing club event rather than a long-standing fixture. The organizing club emphasizes its welcoming nature and inclusivity for all skill levels. This suggests the participants will include local club members, runners new to the sport, and individuals running for charity through a dedicated entry option.

Race For Life Derby

Race For Life Derby is a charity run in Markeaton Park, Derby, offering 5K and 10K distances. The 10K begins at 9:30am. This event is designed for participants who prefer to walk, jog, or run, rather than focusing solely on achieving a fast time. Registration fees contribute to Race for Life's fundraising for cancer research. The start and finish lines are located on a central grass field within the park, giving the event a straightforward park-run atmosphere. The course incorporates varied terrain, offering more interest than a simple flat road circuit. Amy Hall is the listed organiser, and the DE22 4AA postcode directs participants to the Markeaton Park location.

About cycling & running in Derby

Derby Training Notes

Running: Derby runners get plenty done without leaving town. The River Derwent gives the obvious line, and the Derby riverside path runs from Darley Abbey down to Pride Park. Markeaton Park, Allestree Park, Darley Park, Chaddesden Park and Derby Arboretum handle easy Z2 laps and steady intervals. The University quarter works well at night because Kedleston Road and Ashbourne Road have wide footpaths. Sinfin Running Club meets every Wednesday at 6:30pm from The Crossbar in Chellaston Park. Derwent Runners meet Tuesday and Thursday from Derby Rugby Club. The anchor races are Derbion Ramathon, RAM 5 Mile, Derby 10 Mile and Rolls-Royce Harriers Piggs Trophy 10km.

Cycling: Derby riders use the city as a launch pad as much as a base. NCN cycle routes and regional routes get locals out toward The National Forest, the Peak District and quiet lanes. CTC Derby and Burton Cycling Club runs Sunday rides, Tuesday and Thursday weekday rides from Derby, and Wednesday pub rides. Derby Mercury, Ilkeston CC, Derby BMX club and Derby Cycling Group keep the scene broad, from TT legs to BMX and cyclocross talk. Derby Arena gives riders a 250-metre indoor track for training and racing. The climbs sit north, where the hillier parts push into the Derbyshire Peak Fringe and toward the Pennines. Derby Mercury Evening TT 6 25 Mile Championship on Long Lane gives the local anchor.

Season: Summer months give Derby the best mix for runners and riders. Sinfin Running Club routes venture into southern Derby, along the canal, or around the surrounding countryside, and Derwent Runners swap in summer pub runs every third Tuesday. CTC Derby and Burton Cycling Club adds short Tuesday evening social rides from Derby. The Derwent Runners 4 lands on Sunday 21 June 2026, and the Sinfin 5 returns to Sinfin Moor Park on a flat, fast course. Winter changes the rhythm. Sinfin routes stick to well-lit pavement, locals lean on Pride Park and the University quarter, and riders keep base miles honest with Derby Arena sessions.
