CTT Scotland and VTTA Track Day is a short track cycling time trial held at Caird Park Velodrome in Dundee, on a 402-meter outdoor track. Riders start one at a time, not in a group, aiming to finish 5 km in the shortest time possible, which is 12 laps plus 176 meters. Each participant receives a 15-minute window, allowing for a few warm-up laps before the timed effort. Splits are recorded at 1 km and 3 km, in addition to the finish line. The event is organized by CTT Scotland and the Veterans Time Trials Association, with the stated goal of increasing track participation in Scotland. It has a limit of 26 riders, and 20 spots are reserved for veterans. However, riders of any age may enter if they are members of a CTT affiliated club or the VTTA. If more riders apply than there are spaces, selection may be based on recent 10-mile personal bests, with veterans ranked by age-adjusted times. Record attempts are permitted on solo or tandem time trial bikes, CTT-legal road bikes, or UCI-legal fixed gear track bikes; tricycles are not allowed. The 1 km and 3 km marks are eligible for the VTTA outdoor track record book, and VTTA riders who establish age records are presented with certificates post-event.
White Tops Hill Race starts at the Village Hall in Kirkton of Auchterhouse, near Dundee, with runners setting off at 7:30pm. It is a 10.4km hill race in the Tayside and Angus area, so it is short enough to feel approachable but still asks runners to climb. The course gains 364m, which is modest by hill-racing standards and makes it a sensible option for people trying this kind of racing for the first time. Runners can also use the event to raise money for charity, and published past results give returning runners a way to compare their performances.
Running: Locals get plenty done from the city centre, because Dundee gives you the Firth of Tay, Dundee Law, Balgay Hill, and Camperdown Park without much fuss. You can knock out 6 miles short or 6 miles medium. Sweatshop Running Community meets at David Lloyd in Monifieth on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday. Hawkhill Harriers have an intermediate group at the RPC in Caird Park on Wednesday evenings. Camperdown Parkrun gives Saturday legs a proper test, because locals know it is not your average 5k. DRAM, HALF DRAM, Dundee 10K, and White Tops Hill Race anchor the calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride out with Dundee Thistle Cycling Club and Dundee Wheelers Cycling Club, depending on the day and the mood. Dundee Thistle runs often leave from the lift area under the Tay Road Bridge, Invergowrie, or Camperdown Gates, and Sunday runs at 9.30 usually cover 60 to 80 miles with a cafe stop. Dundee Wheelers leave Millennium Hall on Thursdays at 9:15 am, and their Saturday Challenge Rides start at 8 am and build from about 50 to 140 miles. The climbs sit in the line of hills through the city, then north into the Sidlaw Hills where Craigowl Hill reaches 455 m.
Season: Spring and summer suit base miles, Z2 rides, intervals, parkrun, and longer loops, because the days open up and the daily maxima nudge higher. Daily maxima nudge 13°C, so locals can train hard without chasing shade all day. Summer gives Dundee Thistle its more competitive Thursday night APR session, and runners get more evening room around Camperdown Park, Balgay Park, Perth Road, and Riverside Drive. Winter stays mild, but air frost changes the feel, so locals keep the work steady, choose grip carefully, and save the sharper crit, gran fondo, and cyclocross energy for better days.
