Mines of Spain 100

Mines of Spain 100 is an October trail ultra in Dubuque, Iowa, offering 100-mile and 100-kilometer distances. The race takes place in the Mines of Spain area overlooking the Mississippi River valley. The course features bluffs, prairie, forest, and hills characteristic of eastern Iowa’s driftless region. It is organized by Sun Trail Running, with Joshua Sun as race director, and is part of the No Coast Trail Series. Runners will navigate a roughly 20-mile loop that combines steep, technical singletrack with wider, rolling dirt and prairie doubletrack. The course design accommodates both novice ultrarunners and seasoned trail runners, with an emphasis beyond just front-pack performance. The organizers aim for a grassroots atmosphere combined with thorough organization. Proceeds from the race support local trail organizations and Mines of Spain park initiatives, such as trail upkeep. The event also holds Trail Sisters Approved status, indicating a focus on women's involvement and race standards.

Mines of Spain Trail Races

The Mines of Spain Trail Races take place at the Mines of Spain Recreation Area in Dubuque, Iowa. Shorter trail races are scheduled for August, and an ultra marathon weekend occurs in October. The August races include a half marathon, a 7-mile race, and a 4-mile race, all beginning Saturday morning from the EB Lyons area. The longer Mines of Spain 100 features 100-mile and 100-kilometer distances, run on an approximately 20-mile loop within the same eastern Iowa trail system. The courses traverse bluffs, prairies, and hardwood forests near the Mississippi River valley. Runners will encounter dirt singletrack, double track, wide prairie grass trails, rocky technical sections, and some steep climbs. The bluff climbs offer views of the Mississippi River, though much of the terrain consists of runnable, rolling trails rather than constant scrambling. A free Mini-Mines kids' trail race is held on Friday, followed by a post-race party with brick oven pizza and local craft beer. Proceeds from the ultra races support trail maintenance and park projects at Mines of Spain.

About cycling & running in Dubuque

Dubuque Bluff Miles

Running: Locals run Dubuque for the bluffs, the river, and the Driftless punch. Mines of Spain State Recreation Area gives runners over 15 miles of trails, from flat groomed paths to steep, rocky and technical singletrack. The 5 mile loop has creek crossings and quick turns. The 2-mile round-trip works when base miles need dirt. Swiss Valley Nature Preserve brings 10 miles of trails and steep, lung-burning switchbacks. FDR Park keeps the singletrack tight with plenty of climbing. Mines of Spain Trail Races, Mines of Spain 100, and Dubuque Benefit Classic anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride Dubuque with climbing in mind. The Dubuque-1 Bike Route runs 107 km and gains 940 m, so Z2 turns honest fast. The climb to Sherrill and Balltown gives the route its bite, and Balltown sits as one of the highest peaks in Iowa. Heritage Trail gives 26 miles of crushed limestone from Dyersville to Dubuque. Bankston Loop, New Diggins, and Balltown Loop all work for steady endurance days. The Bike Shack gives riders a local hub. Fall Foliage & Ferry Fondo is the anchor event when the bluffs look sharp.

Season: Autumn is the best stretch for Dubuque training, especially when the river valley climbs feel crisp and the trails stay runnable. Spring also works well for building base miles on Mines of Spain, Swiss Valley, Heritage Trail, and the Bee Branch connections. Summers are sunny and warm, so locals start early, keep intervals short, and save long Z2 for shaded dirt or riverfront paths. Winters are typically cloudy and snowy, and runners shift toward traction-friendly routes while cyclists trade gran fondo legs for gravel caution, indoor work, or mountain bike laps when the singletrack allows it.
