Lafayette's running scene is flat and fast—the Cajun Road Runners Triple Crown Challenge and local 5K series dominate a landscape shaped by Bayou Vermilion and the surrounding swamp terrain. Cyclists face the same pancake topography but find escape routes north toward Cane River and the rolling terrain near Natchitoches, about 40km away. Heat and humidity are the real challenge year-round; most serious training happens early morning or late evening.
