The M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay
The M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay is a road marathon in Burlington, Vermont, held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Established in 1989, it is produced by RunVermont, a not-for-profit organization that also manages other Vermont races and training programs. Participants can choose the full marathon, a two-person half-marathon relay, or a three-to-five-person relay with legs ranging from 3.1 to 6.8 miles. The relay format is central to the race's character; Vermont City was the first U.S. marathon to regularly feature a relay alongside the full marathon. The event attracts marathoners from Vermont and other regions, and the relay structure accommodates teams and newer runners during the same race weekend. The race also maintains a RunVermont Hall of Fame, honoring original race director Gordon MacFarland, long-time volunteers Don and Betty Lacharite, and runners who finished each of the first 19 editions.
