Thunder Bay sits on Lake Superior's northwestern shore with a dramatically hilly landscape that defines both sports here. Running courses climb steeply through the city and into the surrounding boreal forest — the UpRiver Running Fall Races tackle the terrain with a demanding 50km route, while the High Noon 24Hr Trail Race uses local singletrack that rewards hill fitness and technical skill over flat-ground speed. Cyclists face serious elevation gain on any route out of the downtown bowl, with Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (15km east, 300m+ of climbing) serving as the obvious escape for longer rides and training.
