The Lizard Under the Skillet and Steve Tilford Foundation Epic are signature gravel events that exploit the region's mix of clay and limestone roads, with elevation gains around 600–800m per 100km ride. Running is flatter in town — Fleet Feet's The Big Run and the KU Vets Day 5K use campus and park courses — but serious trail runners head to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve 30km southwest for unrelenting hills and native grassland loops.
