Summer Sunset Series

The Summer Sunset Series is a 5K walk/run and kids' race series in Hamilton, Ontario, held on the Desjardins Recreation Trail. The main race is a chip-timed 5K on a fast, flat out-and-back route along the waterfront trail, while the 1K Kids Run offers younger runners a shorter, untimed option. The setup is deliberately simple for adults: 5K runners do not receive shirts or medals, keeping the focus on the run itself rather than race-day extras. The Runner's Den partners with Mizuno for the series. Mizuno adds useful touches on site, including demo shoes to try and draw prizes for participants. Kids who finish the 1K receive medals, and all participants get post-race refreshments. Registration and chip pickup are available on race day, with bundle options for runners entering multiple races. Parking is split between free city-street spaces in Westdale and paid onsite parking at RBG Cootes Paradise.

Sulphur Springs Trail Race

The Sulphur Springs Trail Race starts at Morgan Firestone Arena in Ancaster, Hamilton, Ontario, with the course located in Dundas Valley Conservation Area. This trail race weekend features a 20K loop, with ultra distances on Saturday from 50K to 100 miles, and shorter 10K and 20K races on Sunday. Athletics Ontario sanctions the event, BRC Event manages it, and Altra Running provides support. The loop primarily uses double-track trails, packing over 500 metres of climbing into each 20K lap. This makes the longer races demanding tests of pacing, climbing ability, and endurance. Runners will traverse Dundas Valley terrain, encountering wildlife and waterfalls. Teams can divide the 100-mile relay among up to eight participants or the 50-mile night relay among up to four. As Canada's oldest ultra trail event and Ontario's sole Western States 100 qualifier, it attracts serious ultrarunners alongside relay teams and Sunday trail runners. The event also benefits the FAB Foundation and the Hamilton Conservation Foundation. Altra organizes on-course training runs, allowing participants to test trail shoes prior to race weekend.

Tally in the Valley Trail Race

The Tally in the Valley Trail Race takes place in late July at the Dundas Valley Conservation Area in Hamilton, Ontario, starting at 7:00 a.m. Participants run a 7 km loop through Carolinian forest, primarily on groomed double-track trails. Options range from a single loop to a 21 km run, a 100-mile distance, or timed races of 6, 12, or 24 hours. Each loop involves a 130-meter elevation gain, presenting rolling hills that accumulate over distance rather than technical challenges. The loop direction alternates annually. Completing 23 loops, totaling 100 miles, earns a custom belt buckle. The Gong Show, an elimination race modeled after Big’s Backyard Ultra, requires runners to finish each 7 km loop within an hour. La Sportiva provides demo shoes and giveaways, THN Labs offers maple-and-tahini gels, and the event supports SickKids.

About cycling & running in Hamilton

Hamilton Base Miles And Escarpment Climbs

Running: Locals run Hamilton like a hill gym with water views. Bayfront Park to Princess Point gives you paved Z2, open space, and that easy water-side rhythm. Cootes Paradise gives you winding paths, narrow bits, and quick trail texture. Chedoke Radial Trail gives you gradual inclines and short, steep sections, while Harvey Park Trail rolls your legs without drama. Dundurn Stairs have 326 steps, and Chedoke Stairs make a proper interval day. Runners Den, Hamilton Track Dogs, EveryBodyCrew, Early Bird Run Club, Burly Trail Runners, and Steel Town Athletic Club keep the week full. Hamilton Marathon Road2Hope, Tally in the Valley Trail Race 2026, Sulphur Springs Trail Race, and Ancaster Mill Race anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride Hamilton for mixed surfaces, steady base miles, and escarpment climbing. Great Lakes Waterfront Trail keeps the shoreline simple, while the 48 km HamBur Loop connects Hamilton and Burlington with paved and unpaved paths and roads. Waterfront Trail between Spencer Smith Park and Confederation Park works for easier spins, and Lakefront Park to Princess Point gives roughly 3 km each way. Hamilton-Brantford Rail Trail gives 16.1 mi of gravel out and back. Sulphur Creek Trail gives 1.1 mi of singletrack, and Orange Trail to Yellow Trail gives 3.0 mi more. Ancaster Velo, Cycle Hamilton, Dundas Rides, Hamilton Cycling Club, and Hamilton Glow Riders keep riders moving. The brief gives no named cycling anchor race, so locals lean on clubs, routes, and event-style loops.

Season: March, April, May, October, and November are the best months when the goal is Mount Hamilton climbing and steady riding. Summer mornings suit Z2 along Lake Ontario, Bayfront Park, Princess Point, and the HamBur Loop before the day gets busy. Runners use the Chedoke and Dundurn stairs, the Bruce Trail, and Albion Falls to Red Hill Valley when they want hill work without leaving town. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. The upper part of Mount Hamilton often sees closures, and sand on upper sections asks riders to stay sharp. Locals keep running with track workouts, park loops, and trail groups, then save the bigger bike climbs for cleaner days.
